I have found what is best is to forget the usually worthless spare.
I have 255/75r/17 tires and pretty sure it will not fit on the standard tire carrier so if I get a flat and I am anywhere out and about like camping etc the the spare tire is utterly useless because I will have no place to put my flat tire.
What I use is this, in fact used it just yesterday while on my way back from a camping trip I somehow ran over a giant razor blade, the type with the huge curved blade and is about 3-4" long, the entire blade was in the tire, big slice. The only flat I have had with these tires.
A T Handle tire repair kit that uses the vulcanizing repair cords.
ARB 10000010 Orange Speedy Seal Tire Repair Kit : Amazon.com : Automotive
I pulled the kit out, pulled the giant razor blade out, reamed the hole, plugged it with the cord and inflated the tire and was on my way in under 15 minutes.
Less time than it would have taken to go through the hassle of getting the spare out and putting the flat where ever.
Never even have to take the tire off just turn the steering wheel so you can get to it.
I use this for air, can get from Costco for about $70
Also good for a jump if needed.

I am seriously considering just removing the useless spare and stop hauling around the extra what, 50 to 100# just for shyts and giggles.
