I liked the look of the wheel itself, but with it on...I wasn't a big fan. I'm glad you're keeping the the stock rims. And when I change my oil next week, I'll take off the boards and see how mine looks. Why doesn't your girl like the steps off?

p.s. its effing amazing how you've transformed your truck. Its completely 2 different 4runners!

Thanks, I really appreciate it. She doesn't like it without the running boards because she's short and has to spend a little extra effort to get in now. But whatever, I like it better without them. I just added yet another tint to my truck today. My rear window is now double limo (5% on top of factory, and another 5% on top of all of that). Even with limo you could still see into it due t othe front windshield being clear, but it is now pure black. So I now have limo all around.

Haha, I just have to make it past the 1 week drying period. Since it's tint on top of tint, it takes a week instead of 3 days to dry. After that, I can just use one of my favorite 4runner capabilities, which is being able to roll down the back window. I'll just have to refrain from backing into parking spots at night until next week.

It looks bada$$ from behind, and I love that no one can see me from any angle except from directly head on since I'm not tinting my windshield. :bigok:

I have them painted black now, but was curious if anyone had any recomendations on what I can put on for a final coat to keep the paint from scratching off. Any sort of sealer, or anything I can use? Thanks.

Ideally.....Your best bet for perfection is:

1. bulldog adhesion promoter
2. dynastar automotive laquer primer
3. sand with 400/600
4. 100% Acrylic airbrush paint (Golden colors from Michaels Art and Craft or kit hobby shop) in the color of your choosing (or flat color w/b high lightfastness index-Nova Color acrylic in Culver City CA.
5. then automotive urethane clearcoat- SpeedClear is cheapest and dries fast but can still set you back a bit.

simplest and cheapest:
sand with 320, prime with zinc chromate in a can, flat black krylon, 4 coats of crystal clear krylon waiting at least an hour between coats.

When I did them on my 3rd gen I just clear coated them and they last.

On the 4th gen do any of the emblems have body pins. How did you remove the Toyota emblem on the rear hatch.

Total: $1139 (ish)

But that's because I went back like 4 times to one place, then went to a higher end place another 2 times.

The initial tinting was $289 for all 7 windows. It was my first time tinting a vehicle so I went relatively light. I then spent countless trips back darkening them more and more. I finally ended up going to a higher-end tinting shop, who blacked out my windows for me, because I was never quite satisfied with the first shop.

Right now I currently have this much tint on my truck (keep in mind that 5% tint is "limo"):
Rear window: 5% over the factory 30%, then another layer of 5% on top of that. (double limo)

Rear sides: 5% over the factory 30%, then another 20% over that to give it total black.

Front windows: 20% or 30% base tint to kill the green in the glass, then 5% limo tint over that.

As you can see from this picture, you could still see into the rear windows when they just had the 5%(limo) on them. That's why I put a 2nd layer on it so now they are black. Click the link in my signature for my full thread about my tint.

As a follow-up to my last post, here is what they looked like on. However, the salesman was an idiot and they caused my tires to rub too much, so i returned them. They looked okay, but not worth $800. Totally blacked out sounds good until you look at it in person, then it's not as impressive as you would think.

Having the stock rims really brings out how black and shiny the truck itself is, so when I put the black rims on, it defeated that. I also just changed my tint to limo all around, so it definitely looks better with stock rims to help bring out the black in the truck and the windows. (this picture still has 20% on the front windows, but are now 5%)

Wow! Blacked out looks so good!!! I can't fathom why'd you go back to stock! that pic of the other tires just looks awesome Josh! Were they 18" XD's? I guess to fit them in there you'd have to lift higher but I think that looked perfect-especially with the blacker than blacked out windows!

I orginally looked for a white 4R forever- knowing wheels would be blacked out with everything else but couldn't ever find one.

They were XD's yes, but they were still 17". They were just a good half-inch bigger than the stock 17's so they made it rub so bad that it pushed the front bumper out a good 2-3 inches when turning the wheels, and gave off a HORRID noise that could be heard down the street. The stock rims look way better than those did, so until I find a nicer pair of black rims, I am staying stock. I have plenty of things to still do anyways.

I wouldn't spend $800 on rims that just look like black steelies at at more than 20ft;spend that kinda dough get some that stand out at least a little. Plus blacked out just isn't so original anymore and you see attempts at this all over the place.

My exact thoughts. When I had them on, it made the whole truck look bland. With the stock rims, it brings out the depth of my detailing, and the black in the paint, as well as the windows, grille, etc. I will wait until I see some that really look amazing.

They were XD's yes, but they were still 17". They were just a good half-inch bigger than the stock 17's so they made it rub so bad that it pushed the front bumper out a good 2-3 inches when turning the wheels, and gave off a HORRID noise that could be heard down the street. The stock rims look way better than those did, so until I find a nicer pair of black rims, I am staying stock. I have plenty of things to still do anyways.

I've thought about that. And when painting them, I got to see how my truck looked without them. For now I am just keeping them black, maybe in the future I will take them off, but who knows.

How did you take off the front and back? I have debaged my other emblems but dont know how to get at the front and back. On all the other ones I just heated them up and used fishing line. How did you get the back and front off?

The front is easy...you just open the hood, and there are tabs that you press in to get the emblem off. The center emblem has 2 and I think the V8 has 3. I was able to do it with just my fingers.

The back is a little more complicated. It is really just glued on the same way all the other badges are. The problem is that you really cant get behind it very easily with fishing line or dental floss since it is sort of recessed where it is mounted. I ended up heating mine up and using pliers to pull it off. It scratched up the chrome, but since I was painting it anyway, it really didn't matter. I ended up just heating up the left over glue and pressing it back on. It worked great...held all winter, and I just tried pulling it off when the car was out in the sun and it wouldn't budge.

Thanks! I forgot that how you take off the front. I took off my V8 emblem cuz I didnt like it.

The rear I tried but it was hard and I couldnt get the fishing line under it. Im liking the look of the blacked out emblems. I think I might try it...How did you use the pliers without doing extensive damage?

Did you sand, prime, paint and then clear coat? Or jsut paint over with clear coat?

I used a hairdryer to heat up the emblem, and then just used pliers to pull on one side of the emblem. As I recall I pulled where the horizontal part of the emblem meets the side. Once I got that side a fair bit off, I just put my fingers under the edge and pulled. I did have to heat up the glue once or twice to make it easier. It was a little intimidating to do, but it worked out great, and I like the results. I tried to be real gentle when pulling the emblem off as I really didn't want to break the thing. If I did it over, I would have used a thin piece of cloth to protect the emblem when using the pliers. Even still I was able to sand down the area that got scratched, and after painting, you cant tell.

As far as painting, I just lightly sanded the emblem and used the Krylon Plastic Paint. I wasn't going for a real glossy look, so I didn't clear coat it.
