Lazy Dealer Tech

Am I off-base in thinking it should cost about $2k in labor to pull & replace the entire engine?

Where do you live???? South America??

$2k to REPLACE an engine...are you kidding?? Try $4K...MINIMUM.

Parts alone are almost $1000. And this is not an easy job. Several hours in labor. And here in NH..that's $140/hr.

Personally I'd NEVER take my vehicle to the dealer for a job like this. Parts can be bought on-line a log cheaper and independents only charge about $70/hr...This should bring the cost down to a reasonable rate.

I got a call from the service manager who started the conversation with an apology and an expression of embarrassment. He said just from what he had heard from his service writer and the tech were enough to know that they had done wrong. He agreed that there should have been no reason they shouldn't have put a little more effort into the job and that it really made no sense that they should have called parts since they would have had to loosen the parts they wanted to replace in the first place. He offered a free alignment next time and apologized fairly sincerely.
