LC Tokico Black or green Trekmasters?

Hello everyone,

Does anyone know the differences between the stock Land Cruiser Black Tokicos and the green Trek Masters? I'm mainly looking for damping, but build quality variances are interesting as well. I know a lot of guys are using these with the LC springs, but I'm curious to hear opinions with OME 890's (with trim packers to keep the springs from falling out). I'm currently running the SS 7.2 and the rear feels a bit underdamped, it oscillates way too much over most bumps.

Can't give any specifications, but I have the LC black Tokico and am very happy. It came as part of my SS 1.2 rear only kit.

I have the greens with LC 8-wraps and no sway bar.

They are anything but under dampened. Quite firm, but so are my tires.

Steve at Sonoran Steel told me a while ago that the Black Tokicos have similar compression damping as his custom valved 5100's, but with slower ("stiffer" ) rebound. I did notice that he doesn't even sell the 1.2 kit with the Bilsteins anymore, all kits are what was the 1.2a ('alternate', with the Black Tokicos).

I have also read that the LC spring is rated at 160lbs/in and the OME 890 is rated at 190lbs/in, so I'm not sure why you would use a faster ("softer" ) rebound damper on a stiffer spring... I think this is what is leading to the underdamped ride I'm getting. I'm riding pretty light right now, no sliders or gear in the back, stock spare and hitch.

Still trying to figure out the difference between the Trekmasters and the Blacks though...

I feels a lot more planted with the 890's in the back. Much better on the highway, lane changes are a lot better than they were with the LC springs.

I feel the exact same way, just need to figure out black or green... I emailed Tokico to ask about the differences between them, we'll see if they reply.

My advice is to stay away from the Tokico black shocks unless you're running a heavy bumper/tire carrier or pulling a trailer. The ride is pretty stiff. Anyway, that's my opinion, some people like a harder ride. After running them for a year, I'm looking to get into some bilsteins instead.

Trekmasters

Prospectator and I are both running the green LC Trekmasters and love them. We both have 8 wrap LC coils. I think they are the best bang for your buck. They have multiple stages of compression and rebound similar to a bypass shock costing 10 times more. They flex great and work extremely well at high speed in the rough. We have come into some big holes at speed, both thought oh *%&^$! and waited for what could have been a catastrophic rear kick that never happened. This is very impressive for a bolt on shock! I have a background building and prepping off road race cars so I know quite a bit about suspension setup and shock valving. I have no experience with the black Tokicos. If your rear bumpstops have not been extended you might have some coil bind using 890 springs and spacers. This will limit rear travel and can damage the upper spring buckets. My 2cents

The front LC shocks are stud/stud

Rear LC shocks are eye/stud....these are what you need.

Thanks for the input. I extended the bump stops, so hopefully that won't be an issue. So I gather that you are pleased with the durability of them? I guess for the price, you can't demand too much.

I hate to lose the bling of billies, but they aren't doing the job in my application. They cost about twice as much too :screwy:

Anyone have a link to the correct Tokico rear shocks and the 8 wrap springs? This sounds like the perfect setup. Although I do tow an '85 Masertcraft with my 4R in the summer on the weekends. Would the green or the Black Tokico work better for this application? I don't want to experience saggy butt.
