Leak? 14' TEP w/KDSS

Morning Everyone,

Went out to take a snap of the sunrise this morning; after which I noticed this leak coming from under my truck. It feels and smells like water. Here are a couple of pics and it looks like it is coming from above the muffle heat plate. I took it out yesterday for only 20 mins in some soft sand (way too many ATV's/motorcycle's on the trail and didn't do the run) and returned home around 2:00 pm where it has been sitting since. Very odd as there was No Water (desert) anywhere on the trail or road and very dry here and don't think it's any condensation.

Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The suspension fluid is very light pink almost clear. Smells like gear oil but not as rank. You will not get it confused with water.

Sounds like you are okay.

Liquid has to be thinner to run like that. That cancels out ATF or Engine oil. They drop, then make a large puddle as they spread. This looks like water, or KDSS Fluid. It should be very obvious whether its KDSS Fluid or Water just by smell.

Your muffler is also damaged....odd a brand new truck. Get that looked at.

And fwiw, just because you perceive the air to be dry, doesn't mean it is. Take a look under any vehicle with their AC on and you will see water dripping. Even in the driest of environments. Same goes with the exhaust system. The purpose of the catalysts in the system is to convert the exhaust gasses to Water, and harmless gases (as much as possible). Thats why you see water out the tailpipe :)

Check the color and feel first -- Anti-freeze is sweet, engine oil has a slightly different taste than transmission or diff gear oil etc.

If you find a leak, run a finger through it and taste it to help decide what it is and help tell where it came from and start to learn the individual tastes. This will help your diagnostic skills.

 whoa! That was good, almost thought you were serious. :withstupid:

You were good until you said catalysts convert to water. Actually the water is a function of heat produced during combustion which makes hot exhaust gases which hit a cooler exhaust system and causes condensation which causes water out the pipe.

Pretty sure he was serious. I learned a long time ago that, to identify a problem, you look, touch and taste.

Sort of...The water you actually see at warm up is condensation but once the catalytic converter is warm unburnt hydrocarbons are broken into CO2 and H2O. So technically catalytic converters do convert to water...

Catalytic converter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"A three-way catalytic converter has three simultaneous tasks:

Reduction of nitrogen oxides to nitrogen and oxygen: 2NOx → xO2 + N2
Oxidation of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide: 2CO + O2 → 2CO2
Oxidation of unburnt hydrocarbons (HC) to carbon dioxide and water: CxH2x+2 + [(3x+1)/2]O2 → xCO2 + (x+1)H2O."
