Leakage around brakes....? :(

so i noticed the other day (wedensday) on my FL wheel some grease or oil flung on the outside of the wheel, looked on the back side of the tire and there are streaks from where this has flung to the back side of the tire, my first thought was a wheel bearing went bad and blew out or something along those lines, but in the past 2 days I've driven almost 1000 miles and no noises or signs of a failed wheel bearing, i then noticed yesterday, my BL wheel has grease/oil on it and looked in the rim and could see oil dripping from the brake drum, I'm assuming that its brake fluid but my reservoir hasn't gone down any, or at least a noticeable amount

any thought of why these would be leaking like this?

same thought. there are pros and cons. yes you can pump axel grease back into the boot and clamp it with a new clamp. But then if dirt has gotten in there all ready you would of have just pro long the inevitable. I did what i suggested. then a yr later the clamp ring broke off. then decided to get it fix. ran me about almost 350.00.

Is it coming from your rear? If so, then it's definitely your axle seal. Never done it myself, but I hear it's not too bad. You would just need to do the rears.
 
Defiantly not a CV I've blown one of those before, the grease or oil on the front is already dried so hard to tell, but from the way it streaked on the back side of the tire it was most likely an oil, but on the back left tire I was actually able to see it was dripping and it was dirty black, could be black from running down my brake drum if it was actually coming from the axle seal, ugh I hate leaks!!
 
sounds like a rear axle seal or bearing. if its on the front to, im assuming you just had your tires rotated? that would explain front and rear oil markings.
 
Dude twitchee you are a genius I did just have them rotated, that explains why I can't find the leak in the front but I can in the rear, so assuming its the rear seal is this a hard replacement? I would probably want to replace both sides correct?
 
Glad i could help. i only had one bearing go out on mine so i just had that one side replaced. Been just fine for another 30k so far.
 
mine just went too man. there is a bomb ass thread about this as obviously its a common problem. everything you need to know. main thing being the part number. i think the old one ended in 1 and the new one or the one you want to make sure you get ends in 6. anyways good luck id suggest doing it yourself if you can. get up close and personal with your truck.
 
make sure you check the bearing!! when you get the drum off, grab a lug bolt and jiggle it. if it moves it needs to be replaced. When mine went out i replaced the seals hoping that all it was, they were leaking again by the time i drove the 3 miles back to my house from my friends driveway. its about a $350-400 for parts and labor for a shop to do it. you need a press. So far this is the only thing i have personally not done on my truck.
 
So just to confirm, is it the seal or the bearing that is probably going out? The seal right? Ya I would like to do it myself to save some $$ any threads would be helpful I'll start looking though! Thanks for the help!!
 
it could be just the seal but, if the bearing goes bad it allows the axle to wobble which will then cause the seal to go bad. Simple check is take the rear tire off. pull the drum off and grab the lug. if it wiggles and clunks around (you will know) then its bad and i would recommend taking it to a shop. If you go to move it and its solid, then you can do it yourself and just change the seal. I read on the forum that if it leaks its just the seal so replaced that with out checking the bearing first. then after replacing the seal, it still leaked.

so what im saying is just go check before you just go and start replacing stuff. Oh and if its been leaking that for a while without you knowing, your break shoes are probably soaked in oil and may also need to be replaced.
 
ok thanks for the info, that could explain why my brakes have been so sh*ty lately as well, looks like i have some more work to do :(
 
Good luck, where in socal are you? There are al ot of people on this forum down here. I am unfortunately leaving in the morning to drive back up north for the rest of my semester.
