leather wheel reupholster

hi everyone..

as many of our rigs aged, the leather well starts to get worn down..

mine has come to its age and I would like to know if anyone had reupholster their steering wheel? if so, who did you went with and did they have the same materials?

if not, did you buy another wheel to replace it?

Also interested in this one. I've got some clunky ribbed steering wheel cover on it right now but not really a fan of it. Looks awful underneath though.

At this time and for the cost, I would consider the Wheelskin cover. My wheel was getting rough but was not to the point of total destruction, so I went to the Tandy Leather Factory and purchased a product called Super Shene. This stuff is put one with a foam applicator and leaves a smooth glossy finish over the top of leather. After several coats of the Shene, it is working fine and it has filled in any imperfections in the leather.

I found this site a while back, and was considering sending them the wheel for refurbishment but I haven't had the time. I'm sure it's not a cheap option, but there really aren't a lot of choices if you want the wheel back to factory condition.

They'll do different stitching on it. I'd like to have mine done with the BMW stitching, but red and tan to match the truck. :hungry:

Wheelskins work great on steering wheels with small spokes. The older 96-97* models have big spokes and it looks funny when the wheelskin wraps around it. Looks fine on the later models though.

Oh and it goes right over the old existing leather and the end result is a fatter grip which is also better!

Not much of any help to anyone not in my area but I paid $150 a few years ago to get mine reupholstered at a local upholstery shop. Looks oem and is perfect. I was looking at $150 for reupholster vs over $100 for a used steering wheel that still at best had 10 year old leather on it. I prefer this over some wheelskin that is just some sewn on steering wheel cover.

Thanks! Agreed, the spokes are huge. I may still pull the trigger on a perforated black cover. My steering wheel looks great for being more than eighteen years old and I want to preserve that.

On a side note, is it just me or does the earlier steering wheel feel thicker? It also seems like the oak colored 98+ Limited wheels wear quicker than the black SR5/Base ones.

To me it does feel thicker than my buddys 99. But now I have a cheap cover on my wheel and its super thick. Took awhile to get used too.

the thing for me.. is the top part of the steering wheel that gets worn quicker.. and I like having my hand on the 12 o'clock position. and it feels weird that part of the leather is worn.

is it hard to take the steering wheel out? since we have airbags in ours. do i take the battery out and then disassemble it? or?

I have one on my 97 and I really like it. It had held up great for 2 years so far. I've got one for my prius also, and I put one on my dad's Ford edge. They're great, but it looks really stupid in the edge.
