LED Tail light question

I know some guys have replaced their stock tail light bulbs with LED's. Are they worth it? I would order them from superbriteleds.com. Do I want to get red or white bulbs? I think 7443 is the right bulb number.

Not worth it. If you don't mind spending the money to do it right, just get the OEM tails from a 2006-2009 4Runner and pop them into your 4Runner.

LED's

I appreciate the reply. Why do I want the OEM's from 2006-2009? Will they fit without any modifications?

I never mind spending money on my Runner!

Ya I really think if you want LED tails, '06+ OEM is the way to go. They look nicest to me. Although there is a member who did a pretty good job of putting LEDs into the 03-05 lights. I think they were called truck modules or something. Hopefully he'll post up. To me though, it was more work than it was worth. OEM is easy, pretty cheap, and looks best (IMO).

The 2006+ tails are very high quality and will bolt right on to your 4Runner without any modifications necessary. They are also very bright and the LEDs should outlast the vehicle itself. Most aftermarket LEDs (that you install in place of a bulb) are somewhat prone to burning out prematurely.

I've had OEM LED tails in my 4Runner since they came out in '06 and I'm completely happy with them. No issues at all...

Agreed. They will outlast the truck. I've also had OEM LED's on my '06 since i bought it (obviously lol), and I like them much better than my '03 taillights.

All of the 'plug/play' LED bulbs out there are garbage. They will not light up the lens housing enough especially in the day time. You can go over to HIDPlanet and do a search on them there. Most have been reviewed there, and the outcome is always the same. Especially in the day time, you can almost not see them. Also many don't seem to last very long, I think they overdrive the LEDs to get more brightness out of them, and they die prematurely.

I'm the one that the previous poster mentioned that used truck modules in my 04. They turned out fine, but it wasn't an easy mod. I did mine before the 06's came out, if I would have known that they were going to have LED from the factory. I would have just purchased those...

I also converted my bumper lights to LED too, used superflux LEDs and perf board from radio shack. They light up the housing just as bright as the tail lights too, and have been going strong for about 5 years now!

Thanks for that :) Also, I didn't realize that you had done them pre-2006. Now it makes much more sense to me as to why you went through all that. :bigok:

I'll have a set of 07's oem led's for sale in the next few weeks. They are mint with no blemishes what so ever.

I'm not sure what they are worth I'll have to look but I am open to offers as I am replacing mine with hilux surf's.

The conversion is pretty simple just unscrew and then screw them back in. The brake light plug connects to the LED circuit, If you go with LED light bulbs you will need to get a LED relay for the turn signals because they will mess with your system it will think you burnt out a light. Also if you dont go with the stock LED lights do not put LED bulbs in the brake harness it will mess with the brakes. Dont know why but my 4runner started to freak me out lost its power assist dealer didnt know what was wrong either so that why I went with the LED Housing better. No problems since them I got LEDs all around and they are much brighter then stock bulbs not as hot either. Last thing when you do get the relay the only thing that doesnt work anymore will be the lights flashing for the alarm they go on when you activate and deactivate but the when you press the button more than once they will not, still work when its set off though so its really no big deal just letting you know.

07 LED tails

MiRunner:

Let me know what you want for them. I am very interested. You can send me a personal message.

Thanks,

i just replaced my rears with new oem units.

freshens up the rear and there's def that safety improvement.

why someone would go thru the trouble to mess around with questionable aftermarket pieces is beyond me.

Mirunner, My 2007 Toyota 4runner right tail lamp was broken. I need replace the assembly. I don't want after market one. I just want original part OEM one. how much do you offer for only right tail lamp assembly? PM me.

I just replaced the tail lights of my 2004 with OEM-style LED tail lights for 2006± I got off eBay. Everything bolted up nicely and the tail lights and brakes work, but the turn signals aren't flashing at all in the back and are flashing quickly in the front. Do I need resistors? Seems strange if I do, since I thought this was a drop in.

OMG I'm a doofus. I must have read this thread, and this other one (http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-g...-turn-signals-reverse-lights-not-working.html) four times each without understanding the key point.

Incase anyone else sees this, you need to literally remove the bulbs from your old housings and put them in the new ones. They snap in and out with a quarter turn. So unbelievably silly.

Has anyone switch there tail lights to something other than a OEM-style LED tail lights for 2006? I was sitting in traffic today behind a Tacoma and these look like they might fit.
