Has anyone encounter a lemon 5th gen? I think my neighbor has one.. it's a 2016 silver SR5 bone stock. Yesterday we was going to the store. Truck started fine as usual then he puts it in reverse and the truck won't move it's like it's in park.. got it towed to the dealership... he got a call from the the dealership and they stated notting is wrong and it works now..

Anything is possible...

I wouldn't be surprised if the parking brake was just on.

That said, its probably a lemon; send it over to me and ill test it off-road to make sure everything works including the side curtain air bags.

Aloha, did he try something as simple as put in in D and see if it would move forward a bit? Next turn it off then start it again, put it in reverse and try once more or did he just give up right away?

It should not happen ever but some times feces occurs.

I would not consider a one time problem a lemon, if it reoccurs though....

Too little info and likely user error.

Was the engine free revving or loading up? Did he (yes, people do stupid shit) have the park brake on?

I am very skeptical of stuff like this.

I love how people jump to conclusions that it has to be a lemon. Right away it has to be the cars fault but never user error. End rant....

Sorry I just see to much of this on a daily basis at work

One issue and you're crying Lemon?

ha...ha....ahahahahah

Really though, reproduce it...have them fix it...3 times (depending on state)...then you can cry lemon.

since the dealership states nothing wrong must be operator error.

YOU stated stuck in park ... shift lever not moving ?

Even if you have the parking brake on you can back out of a driveway, trust me on this one. The truck will be annoyingly loud though beeping at you. I've done it a couple times.

Umm, yeah, this is true....Ask me how I know.... :embarassed:

I'll begin by saying i love the 4runner. I miss some of the luxury features of prior cars, but I knew that going into it. This vehicle has to be the most problematic vehicle I have ever owned. The dealer can never replicate the issues. I have invested in a GoPro to record all the issues with the Nav/back up cam/HVAC/lighting issues. I show the dealers the videos and they cant/wont resolve the issues. Not only that, most of the time the dealer isnt doing to the paperwork properly to show complaint, there is no specifics mentioned based on my VIN. Toyota corporate has offered a regional rep to come and inspect my vehicle and watch videos, but dealers refuse to have them or when I did get an appointment, the rep wasnt there when I was told, so I took a vacation day to sit and wait, my wife a vacation day to watch our child as I figured it would be troublesome for him to have to sit all day. No show. Dealer says I messed up the days and why was I waiting, why did they take my vehicle back all day and not tell me no rep, after 5 hours of battling I have nothing accomplished but a wasted day.

Am I worried about motor/transmission problems? Nope
Am I worried about electrical issues, you better believe it.

~Paint coming off 4Runner plaque on lift gate (dealer wont work with)
~Nav/radio/back up cam issues (dealer wont work with, 30 hours and 7 trips to deal with)
~weather stripping continuously falls out of track on passenger fromt door and driver read door, new has been put in 2 times at dealer, 1 time at my expense from another shop as my efforts to keep it in doesnt work.
~seat wear is rediculous for a new vehicle considering I dont scrape or wear pants to snag it.
~AC frequently does not work/fan noise is awful, frequently shuts off while driving. Dealer says leaves caught in fan that make noise, but its never resolved, only getting worse.
~While driving, overhead lights sometimes flicker on (even when off)
~clanking sound from steering column when wipers are on (showed dealer, admitted sound, sat in another 3 T4Rs no sound)
~many other electrical flukes that happen here and there with no fix, happened and couldnt record at the time.
~flickering dash lights for a brief moment at random times.

I love this vehicle, but these issues have left me having to buy another vehicle to be more reliable. I bought this to be a family vehicle, client carrier and a sand toy for after warranty is gone so I'll keep it, but I want Toyota to take accountability for this, my Mini Countryman worked better and that is very sad. I still drive this but as a back up, I cant have clients and my child riding around in 100+ degree weather when the AC decides to not work.

I'm no car expert but what the hell could wipers being on have to do with the steering column?!

WOW!!! Sounds like you own a typical European car. This is an anomaly for sure.

If the wipers are running, any speed, you can hear a sharp tinging noise from the column, behind the steering wheel but before the dashboard. I guess you could describe it as the pool/billiard balls striking in rhythm. Sometimes it's not so loud, almost like striking 2 nickels together. It could be heard while driving with a service writer, he tried saying it's normal but I requested to get into a few others on the lot and it did not make the sound. Toyota says it's working, and once more, no service code, no fix. Sure it works, but there is an annoying sound when it rains, which is 275 days a year in FL or more.

My brother swore by Toyota, he had many 4Runner and Tacomas always in ratty shape, bought them wrecked and made them run, never an issue with his, 1st -3rd gens. They were work horses, never failed. My 72 and 81 Celicas ran til I sold them. Wife's Camry and corolla were bulletproof aside from the door handles snapping off inside and outside on all 4 doors repeatedly. My father in laws 09 Tundra is an electrical nightmare much like my 4Runner. I trust the name and wanted a local dealer unlike mini, 60- 80 miles away. I spent at least 1 Saturday a month at the Mini dealer getting things reprogrammed or showing them videos of the car not accepting the key, or the gauges dying while driving.I know this is an anomaly as it's such a high rated vehicle. I wish Toyota would stand by their product while it's under warranty for 3k more miles. 27k miles in 11 months. Still got 25 payments left.

Did you buy the vehicle new or used and if so, was the dealer selling it flooded and/or experienced severe hurricane weather? Honestly sounds almost like the vehicle has water damage regarding the electrical issues.

Also you need to find a new dealer and make sure corporate understands this dealer has been hamstringing you along and hurting your faith in their company.

New, 36 miles on it, drive it 3 times and bought it with 110 on it. I thought with all the issues it may have been worked over by a dealer, but nothing on the title. I know title check means nothing as I've had a vehicle wrecked and fixed but nothing showed on the title but 'serviced at x shop'

My only reservation about flood damage is, why after 6 months of working fine does it start acting like this.

I'll be at the 2nd dealer again in 2 weeks with all my proof and videos. I've spoken to Toyota Corporate this afternoon, they'll get back within 72 hours

Sounds like there's an issue with this particular vehicle and the dealer has either been covering it up/ignoring it on purpose until you're out of the "grace period" (an unfortunately nasty tactic I learned about years ago working used cars) or they are just ridiculously incompetent or both. I wish you the best of luck.

That's weird. I've never heard of any chronic electrical issues in 4th gens.

His Tundra went through 3 alternators, couple starters, all 4 window motors, several CD players and a few other lesser issues. He's a meticulous owner with a vast understanding of vehicles. No mods like stereo or electric accessories. Long distance drives,
