Ok first off here, my mother in law is 84 years old so I won't be letting her drive anywhere let alone drive on of my vehicles. Secondly if for some reason she was to drive either my 4Runner, the wife's 4Runner or my Jeep on 37s (which would be fun to see her get in) then I wouldn't dare think to make her pay for any damage caused. She can barely pay for her own meds and housing so I'm not one to burden those that are in need and plus I'm fortunate enough to have money so I'm not a stingy **** like that

But bottom line is she's not driving anything I own period unless it's a stage one level nuclear holocaust and I'm both blind and missing both hands.

My parents used my previous truck when it was a few months new for a camp trip and spilled about a quart of milk in it.

The response to my complaints was that my dad never had me pay for cleaning bill when I spilled crap all over their cars when I was a child.

^^^This. Even at my age I remember how much of an idiot I was with my parents cars as a teen. I did my penance back then crawling around under the car with dad and helping do the repair. I did it again with my own son when he started driving (grumbling all the way). I think of it as karma coming back to humble me.

See this brings up the do you need to use the parking brake in an automatic on flat ground debate...
I don't usually use it myself except on inclines. My wife on the other hand is situational about it. She does it all the time if it's a hand brake but doesn't in the vehicles like the 4runner with a pedal.

Always use a parking brake. Somebody hits you and sheers your pin you get to watch your truck smash into anything in front of it, even in a low speed situation. Use to be a private driving instructor, had it happen at work when a student ran into another's parked car. Try explaining to hysterical parents, yeah accidents happen but this is now way worse because he/she refused to set the parking brake because they thought it wasn't necessary. RIP honda civic

Instead of being out rear bumper, add hood radiator front bumper and radiator support work. A small slope and she'll roll until stopped.

My mother in law is mid 80s and is legally blind so I'd say she has more reason to wreck shit

When airplane development reached the point in the 30's and 40's that they started using retractable landing gear there was a series of landing accidents, because even experienced pilots sometimes forgot to put the gear back down. The FAA (NACA back then) mandated that all aircraft with retractable gear be equipped with warning horns, so that when they went below a certain airspeed - indicating they were slowing to land or approaching a stall - the horn would begin alarming in the cockpit. I'm pretty sure it is still a feature to this day. Even a few years after this was done you would not believe the number of times during inquiries into accidents the response from a pilot was "I couldn't hear the tower calling to tell me my gear wasn't down because of the horn blaring in my ear." True story.

CRAP HAPPENS. In the larger scheme of things a burned up parking brake is really small potatoes. Especially when keeping the peace in a family is concerned. Do we all love our in-laws? No. But our significant other very probably does, which is what really matters. :wink2:

Other than the concern of a collision, is there a mechanical benefit to always engaging the Parking brake with auto trans on flat surfaces? I've heard some people be really Adamant about the need but couldn't articulate why?

I loaned one of my cars to my daughter and now its in the junkyard. I had to pay for the tow and storage to add insult to injury. My insurance went up since they had to pay out for the other cars involved in her fault mishap. I had no full coverage so the whole fiasco was expensive. Nobody borrows my cars ever especially her. please don't mistake me for someone who doesn't care about family, even the in-laws. i will go well out of my way and do anything i can to help, even if i get little to no benefit from it.

i agree, a burned up parking brake isn't significant. i'm very easy going. if i make a mistake, i own up to it and want to make it right. that's all i ask of anyone else.

takes load off the parking pawl inside the transmission. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parking_pawl

if the vehicle is resting against the parking pawl, it can take more force to disengage when you move the lever from P, which can accelerate wear on both the pawl as well as the cable.
