License Plate Frame Trim

Just looking for a quick answer here.

What is supposed to go in between the License plate frame on the rear hatch and the sheetmetal behind it, mine has nothing, and I haven't had a chance to look at another 3rd gen to see what is there.

Just looking for an answer, the frame is my last rattle on the truck and looking to get it fixed properly ASAP.

This diagram shows the "gasket" as #2, but it isn't sold separately...maybe try a boneyard.

On my 1996 I have a foam strip about 1" in from the edges. I believe this is true for the 96-98 4Runners. On the newer 3rd gens (99-02) there appears to be the mentioned rubber gasket.

My '98 had a foam/rubber gasket. It breaks down over time.
I just replace it with weather stripping from Home Depot.
Works like a charm. Keeps the water out and no vibration.
