Lift Help

I am finally ready to put a lift,wheel,& tire combo on my '02. Am looking for thoughts and advice on lifts and tire sizes. I'd like to do about a 4" lift and prefer suspension but suspension/body combination is ok if it makes more sense. For tires I'm thinking 31's or so but not sure what will work best. Please help with ideas, thanks.

Without telling you to research for yourself the basic setup that will do great offroad and not horrible on road is a 3" suspension lift. 1-2" body lift. 33" tires. How you get there and how much you spend is up to you.

4" lift with "31's would look "funny" :laugh:

Just as Jay said. Stick to 3" or less suspension lift. Any more and it becomes exponentially more expensive to do it right. Tons of info in the stickies. Tons more in posts. Probably the most "popular" lift is a 3" suspension lift, 1"+ body lift with 285 75 16 tires.

ToyTec, Soronan Steel, Old Man Emu, King, or Icon all make a 3" lift

BF Goodrich, Goodyear, Dick Cepek, Cooper all make great tires for a 285/75/16 (33") for on / off road use.
 
I'm considering 33s myself, I'll probably go with some 255/85/16s which could work for you if you like the tall and skinny look.

Leaning towards Toytec 3". Would 33's have plenty of clearance with just that lift? Any suggestions on body lift?

I went with the Sonoran Steel 1.2 system with rear air bags and Tokico rear shocks and I love it. It is a complete kit, 3"+ lift, rides better than stock, corners well, handles off road well, ( I haven't done any hardcore wheeling but going over big roots and rocks in the river bed they call a road to the swimming hole), and it is all Toyota parts. Steve the owner is a good guy with good customer service and is knowledgeable. I went with BFG LT 265/75/16, just an inch over stock in height and like the way they look and handle.
 
This thread reminds me of "I'm changing my oil and oil filter and wanted to know what kind of oil and filter I should use. I'm thinking 5w-30 for oil type. What do you think?"


In all seriousness; I would start in the lift thread. Great information is available there and will get you started.
 
I'm thinking aboot a lift. I don't want to do crazy rock crawling but have some better off road clearance. I'm wondering how much the fuel mileage goes down with each inch of lift, does 3" make much of a difference? I guess the tire size also affects it since they are heavier and harder to get up to rotation. How are 33" 's for mileage?

Depends on what you classify as shitty. I was getting about 20mpg highway with a 3" lift, 33's, front and rear bumpers (with full size spare) and no skids. Just put on about 100lbs in skids so mpgs are going to go down even further. If mpgs is a major concern, I would not recommend modding your 3rd gen. No matter what you do, your mpgs will go down.
 
While people like the 33" tires, after my research, I decided to stick in the 32" range with the Sonoran Steel 1.2 kit. I have LT275/65/r18 which is 32.1". It look great, rides great, and doesn't rub. 33" tires will make a 3.4 L a dog getting onto the freeway. 32" aren't bad.

There's so many opinions and options available it is bewildering, can't make sense of it. Plus new products are always coming out. And then you follow build threads with guys constantly changing out what they previously put in...:redbrick:

Amen brother!! It was a lot of work researching and also getting opinions from members here on what set up would work for me. There isn't any be all end all set up. Go with one that meets your needs the closest. But ya, peeps here do change their set ups a lot!!LOL
 
Leaning towards Toytec 3" suspension or SS 1.2 kit. In regards to wheel tire combos, what size is good, 16" rims like stock or a little larger? Would 31's be too small for a 3" lift?
 
You can fit 31s with zero lift, so why bother lifting it if that's as big as you want to run?

Personally I like 17" wheels due to a larger tire selection.
 
New memeber here, just got a 97' sr5 2wd trying to build it up alittle, just ordered the toytec/bilstein 3" lift ,camburg uca's, and panhard drop bracket, i have read alot on this forum and still have not been able to figure out exactly how big of a tire i can run, i want to run 33x12.5x15 my rims are level 8 trackers i think they are 3.5 backspaced or offset not really sure
Anyways how big of a tire can i run ?whos got the knowledge?
