Lifting an 04 with XRAES and Air

I have read all the threads on lifting the current gen 4Runner, but I have not seen anyone that has lifted an 04 with XREAS and rear air suspension.

Has anyone done this?

I've lifted my XREAS no air suspension SE runner. Do a search and you will find many more lifted XREAS runner, I don't know who has done one with air suspension. Others with lifted XREAS runners are

Bulldog

&

4route

mine has xreas, but not the air-leveling. still lifted it though, easy as pie once you get rollin' on the install, and the best mod i've ever done!

those are the people with lifted 4th gens. that come to mind ... most of us have xreas, though not all, and some of those guys are on yotatech (and not here) ... but anyway. lots have done it with xreas.

mike, i looked at my service manual and took a hard look just looking at the diagrams.

it looks like you can't lift it :( the location of where the air tube and clip is in the way of where the spacer would go.

now if you get a larger coil you might be able to do it but i'm not sure what permanent damages you'd encounter on the pneumatic cylinder.

i'd have to look at the design in person and take it apart to give a better idea of whether it will work or not.

hope this helps.

the other option is just getting spacers for the front and then just crank the rear all the way up (i believe you can get approx 3" right?)

I just recently purchased an 04 limited equiped similar to yours. I have been looking into lifting mine ( which is equiped with X-REAS and rear air suspension )

Looking at 4route's well documented revtek install and a quick look at the rear of my limited, I would agree that it looks like the spacers would interfere with the air lines.

===================================

In the July issue of "Four Wheeler" They have and article entitled "Project TraiLex part I: We told you so..."
In this article they are preparing a Lexus GX470 for the Rubicon trail. Their solution for lifting the GX470 was:

"Here is our 3-inch front lift kit. The stock Lexus front coilover shocks feature adjustable damping and are easily up to controlling 33-inch tires. Stock tires measure 30.5. The bottom mounting eye is part of a 2-inch-long, 5/8-inch-diameter shaft that extends to the shock body. We simply cut the shaft in two, did some careful measuring, and then machined a 21/4-inch spacer which press fit into the two stubs. We then welded the assembly into a solid piece and voila!, 3 inches of lift at the axle hub. The rear lift is already built in with the GX470's air-ride rear suspension, which, on its "high" setting, lifts the vehicle 3 inches. With our 3-inch front lift, the rig sits level and fits 33s with no problem."

In this article they don't have any real information on how they did this "modification" to the rear, just the fact that they did it.

I am positive I don't care for the method they used on the front, I am still thinking about the method that they used for the rear.

jib... I don't have spacers... nor have i made any documentation on any of the installation :)

With the air suspension set on high, the rear is exactly where I want it, but there is no way to keep it on the high setting once you start moving. After 10-20 MPH, the system reverts to normal setting.

Looks like I might use a small front spacer to get a little more clearance for the front (And to level it out), and only run 1 size larger tires.

The air suspension and xreas sounded like a good idea at the time, but now I wish they both were not installed.

Thanks for all the research you guys have shared!

Mike

I went out and measured the clearance between the top of the tire and the bottom of the wheel well.

The fron gap is 4", the rear gap is 6".

To level it off, It looks like I need a 2" front spacer, but no one seems to make one.

Daystar has a 1" or 2.5".

Revtech has a 3"

Has anyone seen a 2" spacer for the front?

My thinking is that the additional 2" in front will help somewhat on the trails, and make the truck look more even. When I am on the trail, I will hit the switch to raise the rear. It raises about 2" with air power.

Since the 265/70R17 tires fit without a lift, I should have no problems there.

Mike

Does anyone know how to change the default height of the air suspension? If that can be adjusted, then a 2.5" front lift would be perfect for me. I could just adjust the rear setting until it was level.

Mike

I was wondering if I got a lift for my truck would my grill gaurd be out of alignment with the rest of the car?

conclusion?

i have a 4th gen limited too and i was wondering if this thread came to a conclusion...so can the air-suspension get a lift or not? i have seen a white lmited and another grey limited that were lifted..but i cant seem to remember who they were. i was thinking of getting spacers or a lift, if possible.

When I get a chance I am going to try the following:

1. Use rear air suspension to raise the rear of the 4runner.
2. Pull the fuse going to the rear air suspension.
3. Drive it like that for a few days.

If it stays up and does not cause any other problems I will leave it like that and install spacers in the front to level it off.

Mike

I was under mine the other day greasing the joints and had a thought. The air bag is simply bolted to a plate on top of the axle. Maybe a fabricator could make a 2" plate that effectively raises the spring mount and then a spacer up front would level it out. This way you would retain all the self-leveling features.

I have the same situation and have been looking into doing this for quite a while. I even talked to a couple of fabricators about getting a piece to fit in the rear like you said, but they were unable to do it. I hope you have better luck there.

My final idea was to get a small front suspension spacer (1-2") and a 2" body lift to try to fit larger tires. I currently have the body lift, but have not yet installed it, and will be waited a while for the front suspension lift.

The idea about setting up the air on high and pulling the fuse works, but you get a flashing light on your dash. I tried this as well, but it annoyed the crap out of me. I would be willing to bet there is a reason for this speed cutoff anyway. Probably something to do bumps at high speed and blowing a bag. Then again, the GX can do it at any speed, so who knows.

cool idea

i was thinking of doing something like that too. please test it out and let us know how it goes. thanks
