Limited 4Runner must go

I just briefly looked at the GMC Yukon. Make sure you research before jumping to GMC. Looks like Yukon was redesigned for 2015+?

yes, this was my point in the orig post when I referenced that while the LE didn't exactly work out, it kept me from buying the new Tahoe bc the reviews have been poor and resale would have been worse. I won't buy a new gen Tahoe, I'm looking at the 2013-2014 ltz series, that gen has been out since 07 and has good reviews. I also owned the gem before that for 10'yrs and it was a terrific vehicle. With all that said, the Lexus LX would be fantastic, it is a dressed up luxury version of the land cruiser and the ratings are outstanding but they are very pricey and harder to find

Florida is probably one of the most pristine places to own a vehicle in North America and you still find the ride harsh?

Not trying to be a jerk but I have triggered brake assist 2 maybe 3 times in over 3 years of ownership and 37,000 miles. In all cases it was because I was not fully paying attention or traffic slowed rapidly and I needed the help.

Lastly, I have 17" Michelin X-Ice xi2 winter tires on steel rims and I notice no real difference in ride quality when I have them on. I rented a 2016 SR5 last August in California/Vegas and it was deifnitely much softer than my Limited. The suspension and drive-train (as already mentioned) must play a part in the harsher ride.

The LX is an incredible looking vehicle- I hope you enjoy it.

So does that mean I could simply swap out the rims and tires and totally transform the ride? I drove a Denali already it had 20s and rode significantly better, not comparison. The Lexus my friend owns is altogether in a different class but hey, they cost 90k, they should be.

Owned a 2007 Denali when they first came with the 6.2L V8 and 6spd. Till date I haven't tried any equivalent truck in terms of effortless power delivery. Sold it same year when the outside door handles started peeling off..

Try an SR5, or a trail without KDSS.. And after that, get into a TRD Pro if you can to see how a step up in suspension feels to you. The SR5 I test drove rides like a Cadillac and sways like a boat. TRD Pro should still feel plush but more controlled. Toyota suspensions simply aren't dialed in for comfort like the Lexus trucks, and yes rim size plays a significant role here as well.

What are panic breaks the the OP refers to ? Do i have them on my Pro, i never heard of such a thing?

Yes. It's a safety feature built for about the last five years called Brake assist. Basically what happens is if the vehicle detects "panic or sudden braking/pedal stab" the system is designed to fully apply the brakes even if you don't intend to. It's based on the fact that it's very common in emergency braking situations for drivers to not FULLY apply the brakes. Toyota made it part of their "Star Safety System". The technology itself is common, Toyota just gave it a name and marketed it.

There are many who absolutely HATE IT... I for one, don't really mind it all, and find it hilarious when it does occur. Trust me when I say that EVERYTHING that isn't bolted down will come flying forward with hell's fury when it engages. I've triggered it two, maybe three times (not really going fast at all)... All in stop-n-go traffic... All because I wasn't paying 100% attention. I'd say it works.

2014 TEP w/ KDSS / Bilstein 5100s (front at 1.75) / Cornfed 1 inch rear spacers / 265/70 Nitto TG G2s / Spidertrax 1.25 / RCI Front skid / Yakima Cross bars / NFab Steps

I got a good chuckle out of that. In all seriousness, that's really a good mindset to have, just laugh it off when the panic kicks in vs getting mad like I do. The whole thing startles me so much that my reaction is anger and you are right, everything goes flying. Happened to me this week. I'm certain if it ever happened and prevented ,e from having an accident, I would be praising the system but so far, it has been totally unwarranted.

Because we all know what domestic vehicles just simple aren't as good. I wonder if the Lexus is built in Japan. The 4runner & the Corolla are the only 2 toyotas that are completely and totally assembled in Japan still & I think that's pretty darn cool.

I'm not sure about the U.S. market, but our Corollas are built right here! :canada:

From the Toyota Canada website:

Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada, Inc. (TMMC) has built over 6,000,000 vehicles in Canada.

We employ approximately 8,000 people at our plants in Cambridge and Woodstock, Ontario where we build the Toyota Corolla, Toyota RAV4, Lexus RX 350 and Lexus RX 450h hybrid vehicles.

TMMC was the first plant outside Japan to build a Lexus vehicle (RX) and Lexus hybrid (RXh).

1st time I hit the brakes hard and think I got some shit on my drawers.... but now if I have to slam the brakes I know it is coming so it really doesnt bother me anymore. Not sure about the older LXs but the new ones do the same thing. When I test drive a vehicle I jam the brakes to see what will happen.... no more poo in the pants for me

No vehicle is perfect. My wife just got out of a GMC SUV for a 2016 Highlander, Toyota/Lexus from now on.

You are going to be going from complaining about driving 20's which give a harsh ride to oil/tranny leaks. I would rather be able to switch out rims for 17's than be at the dealer a few times a year for recalls and leaks.

Honestly, my '16 SR5 4x4 drives soooo nice down the road. I also just put on KO2's in load range C. The stock P tires were super soft, I actually wanted it a little firmer.

that's because you know how to drive

if anyone is causing the panic brakes to activate on a regular basis the problem is the driver, not the vehicle

Second, the panic brakes are miserable. About once a month, I do something that triggers them and it is unnerving at best. Hate the feature.

I totally agree with you on that point!

I had some jackhole pull out in front of me one day and when I hit the brakes, instead of the smooth, controlled deceleration I was used to in my old H3, I got full on lock down, tire screeching mode and I almost slid into them.

This so called, panic mode brake assist "feature" seems to be the exact opposite of anti-lock brakes.

Is there any way to disable it?

I've purchased a lot of different vehicles over the years.
My Limited is my first Toyota.
I love the way it rides and drives. I knew from my first test drive that this was what I wanted.
I traded a brand new Honda Pilot for the Limited because the Pilot was burning a quart of oil every 1k miles. (Honda says this is normal)
Stay away from vehicles that have cylinder deactivation!

its not the opposite, its just a somewhat different purpose. a lot of people get into accidents because they aren't braking aggressively enough, they aren't taking full advantage off what their brakes are able to do or they underestimate what is going on in front of them until its too late. anti-lock brakes will keep your wheels from locking up, but they do not apply maximum braking.

what the panic braking does is see that you made a quick brake and then stops you as quickly as your brakes are able to. a situation where you are making a smooth deceleration won't trigger them, its when you quickly get on the pedal that triggers the panic braking.

i've only triggered them twice and in both cases i'm happy they did (vehicle pulled out in front of me when i had green, and when large debris came off vehicle in opposite lane and it was stop quickly or get splattered by a giant sheet of plywood.

I've learned something that may be useful here. I just traded an '11 Tundra w 148k miles for a 2016 GMC Sierra Z71 (4wd) 5.3l CC. I still have three 4Runners that I drive regularly, if not far.

This GMC product is different from the myriad Toyota products I've owned over the years (3 Tundras FI). It is impossible to compare, each has features that make it unique and are judged as individual preferences.

I'm a Toyota guy. As least as much as anyone here. They've disregarded the full size truck market purposefully, maybe the corporate bread-and-butter is the Camry.

If - and note my use of IF - the GMC proves to be reasonably reliable (AIP anyone?) I'd not at all be surprised for my wife to one day trade her '15 SR5P in for a Yukon.

Damn. Did I just say that?

You say that..but give it 80k miles...right when those DoD lifters fail....

The 5.3L is a tank. I traded in a 2013 silverado cc for my 2013 TE t4r and it's the only thing I miss about the truck.
