I’ll throw in a wildcard and ask if you’ve looked at the Subaru Ascent? Usable 3rd Row, updates Tech, Subaru awd and some good aftermarket stuff if you want to turn it into an adventure mallcrawler. Bikes and Subies go together like peanut butter and jelly.

I was going to suggest the same... a Subaru. Either Outback XT or Ascent (depending on your seating needs).

Only reason we switched from an Outback to the 4Runner was the true 4x4 and frame for towing. And I've always wanted one lol :dance:

OP asked for opinions. Not to bash this truck, but honestly? Not sure why someone would choose a 4Runner when they don't need one. There are other much better choices. A small fraction of folks really need a body on frame, heavy, on-demand four wheel drive, high riding vehicle. And its simply not the safest choice either. We have one because we need it - the best choice for us, but that's a long story. I am amused with people tooling around Charlotte in these things. I guess I don't get it.

Wow you're all pretty right about why would you get one unless you really need those capabilities, but I've never thought about it like that. I always loved my 4Runner, but never even used it for what you guys do. It was only 2WD with Michelin LTX tires for hot ass Florida. Got it when I was 29 until 37. At that time, Volvo's were ugly, Acura/Lexus/Range Rover/Porsche all too expensive, I wouldn't buy any American SUVs, and Honda Pilots and Highlanders seemed like soccer mom cars. 4R's just seemed like a great fit and I drove it from 36k miles to 175k without ever having a single repair. Not a valve cover, not a gasket, not a sensor, NOTHING!

I actually walked over to a lady at the gas station today in an XC90 and randomly got her opinion. She said she owned a 2015 for 3 years and it was in the shop for 3 entire months of that getting major repairs, but she said she still loved it and bought another. That's great and all, but not too inspiring for me lol

So I bought a 4Runner today! Half because mine was so reliable and great, and the other half because I just couldn't find anything better like you all suggest (seemed like the XC90 gave it a run)

But I appreciate the insights. And I definitely knew I'd be getting some slightly biased opinions, but that's what I wanted

So mall crawling and cool factor are the wrong reasons?

I didn't see those as reasons he listed. He said to take the kids skiing and hiking.

It is a monumental waste of money and materials. So yes IMO those are the wrong reasons. But, I'm not your dad and people are going to waste their money how they see fit.

We currently have both. 2012 4 cyl Outback is my wife's DD. We got the 4runner mainly because there was no other BOF midsize SUV with the 3rd row (that we do actually use on occasion). Our next choice will be what to replace the Outback with in a few years, another Outback or the Ascent. So far 130k trouble free miles on the Outback and still going strong.

What I expect from my vehicle:

Ample gear storage; camping, fishing, etc.; 4runner check

Mild offroadability; 4runner check

Ice fishing; I need to trek over 10+ inches of snowpack at times on a frozen lake; 4runner check

Good build quality reliability, and strength; I want to be able to make a spontaneous trip to the wilderness without worrying if I will break down; 4runner check

Good gas mileage; Nope!

Ability to tow a small to medium sized trailer/boat; 4runner check

Comfortable haul my puppy spring, summer, and winter; 4runner check

I dont need all the capabilities but need most of them. I could have chose a highlander, but the strength is not there when I'm miles off the somewhat beaten path (maybe a peace of mind thing).

Ha, I wanted to keep our outback with 92k miles and sell her S60 with 37k because the outback was bulletproof, hauled the kids and stuff better and got almost the same mpg.

My wife liked her S60 too much :frusty:
