Limited Edition Mod Thread

Gave my taillights a slight and subtle makeover and smoked them out just enough to blend in with blacked out look . Didn't want to give it the completely murdered out look. Didn't want to get that extra attention from Johnny law.
Got one more mod then I'm done. Gobi rack on order and that's it.... at least for a month or two. Haha. Dang this forum for creating a monster.

Starting out with a fairly blank slate. Just picked up this 2010 LE last Friday and I'm already coming up with minor mods I want to do. It's came with gunmetal gray Black Rhino 20x9 wheels (with some new 275/55 Chinese AT tires the dealer threw on). Since my off-roading will be pretty mild and seldom, I'll probably run the current tires for a while before I change them out for something that's a bit more robust. I'll see how it does in the snow. I may be switching to narrower tires sooner than later. My primary use will be as a DD to and from work with occasional day trips (mostly highway) around the state, and also to haul band gear to gigs around town.

The X-REAS system has been replaced with new-looking Bilstein 4600s on all four corners. I do want to level it out, and perhaps lift it an inch or so. Debating between just replacing the front shocks with Bilstein 5100s raised .85" and leaving the 4600s in the rear, or putting 5100s front and rear, raising the front 1.75" and adding a 1" spacer to the rear. Not interested in raising it too high, since that just makes it harder to load the guitars and other band gear.

The wife has expressed interest in a step or nerf bar to make it easier for her to get in, but I'm on the fence about it. I don't want to lose the clearance. I don't think I can justify the cost of true sliders at this point.

I'm open to any other suggestions...

Just bought a 2014 trail- considering some of the same with spacers, etc. Like to run at least 275/70/17- just not sure about long term effect on suspension with spacers- i still ahve the dress. I did add step bars- they look great. I will send a picc

275/55R20's with a daystar 2.5/1.5 kit. Wheel spacers are 1.5". I did have rubbing until I removed the inner mud guard and massaged the fender liner. I was worried that all this messing around would affect the ride but it handles great on the road. No shake / no wobble.

Uh...me too. Didn't think it existed

Alright, disclousure: I work for RC, but I didn't join this forum to try and push our brand on everyone. I just dig our stuff and love Toyotas (especially my new 4Runner). These threads are a jungle of knowledge, it's fantastic.

The 5th gen X-REAS 3" is not something that is available as a kit... yet. But, I took existing parts we manufacture and put together what will hopefully become the kit. I will eventually post a more detailed write up of the install, but here is the gist:

  • Front: Diff Drop and Strut Spacer (no preload)
  • Rear: Coil Spring Spacers and Shock Mount Extension Brackets

The wrinkle with the X-REAS (as I'm sure you all know), has always been whether to disconnect the lines or not, take the struts apart or not. By not installing a preload spacer, you aren't required to disconnect anything. Preload spacers are generally built into kits to protect the CVs, and that is what we did with the standard 5th gen 3". Just doesn't work on this suspension.

The top hat spacers require the use of spring compressors, and you can do this "on the vehicle" with just the strut un-mounted and fluid line still connected. The spacers offset the top bolt pattern and compressors allow the top hat to be rotated back to square. That's all you need them for, not disassembling the strut.

The rear shock brackets mount to the bottom factory shock mounts on the axle. Need this to correct for the imbalance in the fluid lines created by lifting the rear.

Everything bolts right up - there was a little adjusting to the rear shock brackets (bending them wider to accept the bushing), but nothing I would even consider a modification. Glad to answer any questions, and at some point I'll add a post with pictures to the threads on the X-REAS. It really is a simple install, 8 parts with hardware and it drives and rides great. Of course we can sell the components at retail, we just don't have a kit up online... but, if enough of you ask...

what's the advantage of this over a daystar levelling/lift kit or toytec levelling kit?

Just curious!
