I thought it had been decided that the V6 does have a mechanism to disconnect the front wheels from the drive train as well as disconnecting the front portion of the drive train from the center diff/transfer case.

Yep, dcampen, you're right about that. There is an electrical mechanism bolted onto the right side of the front differential to disconnect it from the front wheels. It's covered in detail in the repair manual.

I thought it disconnected the right hand side, not both?

Does the 4th gen have a new system? In 2WD nothing moves in the front diff?


I don't see how part-time is a clear benefit. Is the full time system front diff going to wear out? I've never had a front diff fail in a FWD car.

The part-time system uses actuators/vacuum lines, etc. to disconnect shafts, and could have problems with a lift.

The part-time system is more complex and has many more parts that could malfunction.

For me, simple is better and more reliable. If you want the part-time option, go with the V6.

Where did you get 5100 lbs.? The heaviest 4Runner model is just over 4500 lbs.

Sorry I stand corrected, 4Runner in v8 form is about 4500 pounds (from Toyota's specs page on the web). I was just trying to illustrate how well the truck handled with XREAS vs. a smaller lighter car. Turns out my Golf doesn't weigh 3000 lbs either its 2800 .

You could always put XREAS on after the purchase. That's what I did. Finding a Limited V8 in my color preference was next to impossible in CA. So I added the XREAS system myself. You could make a deal with the dealer to order the parts for a discount. Quite simple to install.

This is the first I ever heard of it being added after by the dealer (or did you actually do the install). I'm surprised that they were willing to do it. And if it was you who installed it, will it be covered under the warranty? How much did it cost to add?

The dealership would be more than happy to add the system after the sale. Since Genuine Toyota parts were used and I consider myself to be a qualified person, I see no reason to deny the basic warranty. See pages 27 and 28 of the owners warranty booklet. But of course we all know about warranty claims.(Pulling teeth). So I will cross that bridge if needed. The cost would be around 1k for the parts needed to update to XREAS.

When I added up the value (as I quantify them) of all these features, I feel that the Limited is priced about 3 - 4K too high.

That just about summed up my findings. If the difference was less than $1,500, it would have made my decision (Sport vs. Limited) very difficult.

However, the Limited with XREAS was about $3,000 more than the Sport (with side airbags and JBL w/changer) and the only two things of value to me were leather and the power driver's seat (marginal value).

Didn't really consider the V8 since the '05 V8 wasn't shipping yet at the time of my purchase. The V6 is more than adequate for my needs.
