Line-X UnderCoating

Has anyone every used Line-X Undercoatings on their Runners? Someone I know runs the one here in Virginia Beach and told me for $550 they'll remove all the rust, spray a rust inhibitor and then undercoat everything but the driveshaft and exhaust. Seems like a pretty good deal considering the amount of work that is for someone with just jacks and a friends driveway (and also working 60-70 hours a week)

You had me at "remove all the rust". I wouldn't do this when there's preexisting rust.

That doesn't sound like a bad price to me! I wonder if I could convince them to just do the "remove the rust" part so I can see what's up and fix what I want to, then use the inhibitor and undercoating.

its just some light surface rust because its a 14 year old vehicle. I live in VA Beach so theres maybe one snow a year. They won't do it if the rust is bad though. They brush off the surface rust and then do the actual process

Unless they convert/neutralize the rust -- even the little bit of rust, it will continue to rust under the LineX. Personally, I have used converter (on heavier stuff) and encapsulator (light surface rust) with a healthy dose of fluid film all over the undercarriage.

I just called him and he said the inhibitor has a converter chemical in it so they brush/ wire wheel the surface rust off then spray it and then undercoat

Totally honest, I don’t believe in those coatings completely. Maybe POR15. Also realize that this will not improve longevity. A 4Runner has never rusted from the outside in. They always rust from the inside out. Plus a coating as tough as a bed liner will create an incubator for underlying rust if this rust inhibitor is pathetic. You’re better off with a heavy dose of fluid film. All that coating it does is make it pretty.

They always rust from the inside out. Plus a coating as tough as a bed liner will create an incubator for underlying rust if this rust inhibitor is pathetic. You’re better off with a heavy dose of fluid film. All that coating it does is make it pretty.

I imagint it would be alot of prep fo that. Linex comes out hot and under pressure. Hwo would you not cover up all sorts of brake lines etc. I have seen this done with the frame off. but with frame on would be messy and probably not that effective. stick with rust proofing products and udercoatings.

they don't use line-x for the undercoating, its just at the line-x shop

Had my friend with a tacoma go use the Line-X of Virginia Beach. Maybe your friend who runs it can hook you up, but what he went through was just horrid. He wanted his roof line-x'd because it had a lot of rust spots, and just wanted to line-x it. They quoted him 500 to remove the rust and line-x it. The line-x'd it once, and the next day just a huge freaking bubble and started pealing back. Under the peeling, they didn't even bother sanding the rust down, it was just rust just like we had sent it in. Had them peal it all back again and watched as they sanded it down, paint still didn't stick, still more bubbles. Had them peal again and redo, and he was finally just fed up with it. It's sticking now, but looks like utter s***. I'll take some pics of it if you want. I don't think I'd trust them to sand all the rust off unless you watch them....

I think after all the research ive done Id be better off just using a rust converter and doing it myself

Yep, I'd just go to town with some Fluid Film, it'll end up being less than $100/year to coat it? There are some DIY Garages in some areas where you can rent a lift, I'd definitely go that route to make it easier if it's available.
