locker switch with safety?

hey folks,

I've just got ARB front locker installed.
Here is where switches are located (not sure how to put a pic in-between text)..



Now... it really feels like it's way too easy to accidentally turn it on while driving. Yeah, I know that the compressor needs to be switched on first and then locker will engage but I still feel rather anxious.. Also my wife and kids drive the truck from time to time.. so...

Does anyone know if there are automotive switches with safety cover or safety lock of some kind?

I only found this on amazon . But was wondering if there is anything better looking

I would be nervous about that too. I’m surprised ARB doesn’t include a safety switch. Locking up your front at 75mph would probably be a bad day. Here is a shot of the Eaton locker switch that I have. It has a safety lock built in. You may be able to source one and make it work?

Thanks Xtremluck! It looks like Eaton doesn't sell those switches separately and buying the entire harness would be an overkill... but I was able to find some potential alternatives while searching for Eaton switch Just need to make sure they are tough enough for the current needed.

I used CH4x4 dash switches instead of the arb ones, but they require a bit more wiring because you'll also need a couple relays. But they're less likely to get accidentally pushed because they're flush mount like the OEM switches. The easy solution for the ARB switches you have would be to put a toggle switch under the hood at the compressor or inline with the power wire to your dash switches. Then if the switch is "off" the compressor doesn't work and you won't need to worry about what someone does with the inside switches. I have a master under-hood toggle switch and relay for my winch so no one can grab the wireless remote and use it. It's a nice extra safety measure. When you go off road you could just switch it on for the trip.

Locking the front at speed is very dangerous if you haven't tried it. You cant steer much at all. It's scary. I did it on a safe stretch of road just to see what happens. You'll need to be in 4x4 first or you might damage something internally in the diff. I think a master lockout switch is a good safety idea.

That's a really good idea in general. Thanks! And there are tons of switches with safety cover that would feet the need.

I just had to get the rear diff replaced - a snow chain broke and wrapped around the axle when the rear diff was locked. That experience I definitely don't wanna repeat. On the positive side though I've got a brand new diff housing, new gears, and a front locker which otherwise would take forever for my wife to approve :biggrin1:
