lockers and power

Hey to the guys running lockers in their rigs do you have enough power with the 3slow and a auto tranny for them sticky situations. My buddy was giving me the gears sayin his Colorado 5cyl has a tough time with just the rear locker and 32's I told him thats what 4lo is for

I plan on running no larger than 33's on my 95 3vze and was just gonna put a rear locker in (unless there is enough power for fronts as well). I am not looking to spend a pile of cash on one seeing it is my daily driver All I wanna do after a locker (if you recommend it) is the Ball joint spacer and spring kit (to fit 33's) then manual hubs and that's it for drivetrain until something breaks.

I already have intake and exhaust so it breaths a little better so I may have picked up a few ponies there bahahaha.

how do you guys like yours? any input would be awesome if you can tell me what type your running also.

In my '87 I'm running 32's with 4.1 gears and a worn out 4cyl. I have an Aussie Locker in the rear.
On the road, I have trouble going up hills on the interstate. 5th gear is only for down hill.
Off road, low range was pretty good. Then I put in the 4.7 low range gear and I can get out and walk next to my truck at idle. Awsome off road!

I would think the biggest thing is your diff. gear ratio. The 3.0 is only marginally more HP than the 4 cyl, so your capability should be similar to mine.

If you don't re-gear your axles, I'd re-gear your low range in the transfer case for off roading.

The axle locker does not make a difference on road and it does not really care what axle ratio you have for off roading.

Hope this is somewhat helpful....

Agreed. The locker won't make much of a difference, your gears will. My 22R-E with 4.10s open diffs could not make it up most sand hills at Seddons Corner, not enough power and if I hit it with enough jam it would chew it up on side due to the open diff and just dig in.

If you have G144 on your door sticker you should be alright, 33s with 4.56s and the auto may kill some of your power.

Iv'e got an 88 with the 22RE, my rear diff is welded (so always locked), I've noticed very little difference in power in either high or low range. (however the new catback I got with a 2 1/2 pipe made a difference :)). But I have to agree with topdown. 5th is for downhill :)

Good reading thanks guys for the input.
I am going to do the LSD upgrade in both front and rear I am going to use the 8" Supra unit and the Celica 7.5" unit up front. I don't off road my rig so the LSD option is a better choice for me. I am going to mod both LSDs for a stronger lock and do a few other upgrades to the third members too.

My 88 is very strong the 22RE has more pep than any other I had. I have a full 2.5" stainless exhaust, LCE header and K&N not sure if this is why. I use 5th gear all the time and don't need to down shift much on hills unless they are steep and I fall under 55 MPH. I have 4.10 gears with 31x10.5 tires

As others have said, a locker has nothing to do with that. If you go to taller tires without regearing you will loose power, as the engine is operating out of it's powerband. And 32's are nothing to a Toyota ;)

Sweet thaks I figured I would not have a tough time running a rear locker on the rig, I figure if I have enough power in 4lo to pull out a dead silverado on 33's hung up on its frame in mud no problem.

What should I go with? I was thinking lockrite dont wanna put too much money into the truck once it bites the dust (anything over 1g to fix) 3rd gen time unless I can find a mint 1gen.
