Was your original transmission giving you problems? I've looked at the Marlin site a few times and thought that I would go with them if I ever needed a new unit. Did you do this preemptively or had your original transmission failed already?
I've also wondered how people select a shop to do this type of work. Did you know this shop? Did they give you a firm quote for the swap and how many hours did they charge for?
Must be great driving it. The short shifter is such an improvement. How is the shifting engagement? Much smoother than before?

Curious why you didn't go with the Marlin shifter. I would really like a short shift but am really wary of the URD. Seemed to read a fair amount of threads when I used to be on Tacoma World about failure caused by the URD kit. I don't think it's a very high percentage of owners that experience the failure but the fact that it results the vehicle being completely undriveable until an expensive OEM shifter is put makes it not worth the risk to me. Being stranded is not my cup of tea. Did you consider the Marlin short shifter?

Hey, My original transmission was whining in 1st 3rd and 5th and also making a lot of unusual noise. Being this Is my off road truck, I don't want to be stranded 200+ kms off the beaten path.
This is my close buddy's shop so he didn't charge me, (well lunch and beer) we did most of the work together so...
ITS AWESOME! drivng it! The shifter engagement is TIGHT!

"3RZRUNNER", wow that should have been more obvious to me. You didn't have much of choice to make did you The URD kit uses a ball extension, this places added stress on the factory ball. The vast majority have no issues with this kit and I imagine you will be fine. However, there have been several documented incidents where the factory ball has broken clean off of the rest of the shifter assembly. While this is a simple problem it causes two major issues. First you have no way to driver your truck until it is replaced or you get really creative on rigging some other way to make shifts. While I am sure a solution could be dreamed up it does not sound like fun in the middle of a remote desert trail. Second the factory shifter is very expensive.
I had the TRD kit on my 6-SPD Tacoma and loved it and have heard the URD kits have a very similar feel. IF my 4runner saw less trail time (ie. remote difficult/expensive areas for recovery) I would probably already have a URD on it. I just have a huge fear of being 80 miles into the Kokopelli and it totally disabling the truck.
