Looking at possibly purchasing this 2011 Trail Sport. Opinions?

I have been looking to join the Toyota 4runner family for about a 3 months or so now and this will also be my first time to purchase a car "on my own", and I must say that I am little nervous. I do not want to be burned by this purchase.

Now, this vehicle is listed at $19.5k has a 147k miles , which makes me a little weary. Is that too many miles? If it is, what should I set my limit at for when I am looking in the future?

I do like the color, the color of the interior, and I definitely want the v6 with the 4wd instead of the v8. I just do not think that I need the extra power that the v8 provides.

I checked the free CarFax report and it looks clean with no accidents. The maintenance never seemed to be neglected, although it probably could have been a bit more regular. Because the truck has quite high miles for a 2011, I assume that the majority of the driving have been on the highway and that seems like a good thing to me. I have seen on this website that some suggest to contact the place that the most recent maintenance was done and do a little digging to see what they know. I plan to call tomorrow and see what they have to say about it.

I have not been to look at this vehicle in person. I do not live in the same state that this vehicle is located in, so it would probably be too much of a commitment to travel up to look at it without purchasing it.

A 2011 with that many miles is a no go in my mind.

Keep looking for that 2010+ with the V8. Let me know when and where you find it.
 
It would be to many miles for me. My 03 did not have that many miles on it when I traded it in last year. Look for one with 100k less miles on it..

I should have listed the price initially and have edited my original post to include it. It is listed for $19.5k.

Just out of curiosity, is there something wrong with the 2011 when they get to be "high" mileage? If not, why do you think no to this one?

I have mostly been looking at trying to pick up a 4th gen (~06-08), but I thought that I had found a pretty good deal on this one. Sometimes when I say it out loud, it seems a little silly to be looking to pick up a vehicle that is already nearly 10 years old, but I am dead set on a 4Runner and those are the only ones that fit into my price range.

Also, congrats on getting 4Runner of the month! That is a pretty cool honor!
 
No, nothing about the 2011 to worry about...

however, as a general rule of thumb, thats just A LOT of miles...period. i have a 2003 F150 with 133K...so to look at this Rnnr, someone has put 10-12yrs of driving into this vehicle in only 4years...

In general, you will find many others on this board with older Rnners who are reaching for the 200K mile mark, with very little problems out of them. But, the key is that they are also keeping very close track of the maintenance schedule, keeping an eye on the tops and bottoms of their rigs, and probably have had their trucks well paid off by then...so anything that is going to need replacing or that may break, they have that cash ready to go to fix it. Not to mention the sentimental attachment of owning a vehicle for that long/many miles.

I dont think you will find anyone who will say that this particular T4R isnt worth buying...but take my own search/purchase as an example. 6mos ago i was looking for a Rnr/GX with anywhere from 50-100k miles on it for a comparable price. Within my diligent search, i came across the truck i ended up buying, with 20K miles on it. did it cost me more, sure. but in a yr, 3yrs, 5yrs, my mileage will read 60-80k, instead of 120-150K...

so think about it...you purchase this one with 147k...by the end of 2015, is it possible that you could have 160-180K on the truck already...daily driver, new toy, winter's coming, ect...all of the reasons you'll be driving it MORE than any other vehicle that you currently may own... just my 4 cents :keyboard:
 
I bought a 10' with 28k miles two weeks ago. I would wait it out and let that one pass. That is a lot of miles for the money....
 
You want to see an average of 12k miles/year.

If your budget is tight, then go with a 4th gen, you can get one with less than 100k miles for less than that 5th gen.

Yup agree with everyone else. While high mileage usually wouldn't scare me away from 4runners, I couldn't bring myself to pay $20k for a vehicle with 147k miles on it. You should be able to get a nice 4th gen with a lot lower miles for that budget.

The person was averaging 30k a year roughly. Just high in my mind. Granted I hope my truck goes for 300k but I bought it new and know everything about it and what has been done to it.

It's really your call. You can probably get a smoking deal since the mileage is very high. Will there be issues? You never know, a brand new car can have issues.
 
Dchurch7 - I appreciate your question and understand your enthusiasm for the 4R. I hope you are reading these posters - many with notable experience - the way I am reading them. Probably not a good deal for you.

We traded my wife's 2010 4R SR5 and they were asking $25k. I know. They probably sold it for $22-23k. It had 70k miles.

Be patient. Keep looking.
 
I bought my 2010 Trail w/ kdss as a certified pre-owned in Nov, 2014. It had 60,000 miles, 1 owner, and the carfax/dealer history showed the car had been maintained very well. I paid $26k. Just for a comparison.

I could have paid another $8k for a new Trail. $8k is a decent amount of money. In my mind (which im basing totally on gut feeling), I wouldn't pay more than $12-13k for a 2011 4runner with that many miles. Save up an additional $5-6k and you can find a 2010-11 4 runner with 60-70k miles on it.

I guess there is a simple question we can ask. Do you plan to finance? I know some companies won't finance a vehicle with that high mileage, and some won't do it with too high a yearly average.

Agree, I just traded in my 2005 F150 with 155K miles and I took a hit on the trade in value for these miles.

The dealers like to use 12K per year, but 14-18 is more normal, IMO.

Not being a 4Runner expert, but having owned many, many vehicles, I would pass on a 4 year old vehicle with close to 35K miles per year. Make an low offer. Knowing what I know about Toyota's, I have owned many, if this vehicle has been well maintained, it has another 150K+ left in it.

Have you checked the NADA value? I can assure you there will be a deep discount for this mileage.

Thank you everyone for the responses. Sorry I have not written back for a couple of days. I am a school teacher and with school getting ready to start back up, I have been rather busy.

I have decided to pass on this vehicle and focus on finding a 4th gen. Thank you everyone for the honest opinions, you have all been very helpful

I plan to look for a 4th gen with ~100k miles on it with a clean carfax report.

The search continues!
