Looking for info about the 4th Gen. 3.4litre SSRX Petrol 4x4

Hi Guys,

I recently brought a 2004 (4th Generation) Hilux Surf/ 4Runner 3.4 litre petrol 4x4, and am a bit worried I made a compulsive buy. Having only ever owned Diesel 4x4 manual vehicles, the shift to Automatic and petrol is taking some adjusting- ESPECIALLY when it comes to fuel consumption.

If anyone has one of these vehicles please could you tell me about your experience with it as an offroad vehicle and your fuel consumption?

Might have a hard time here with that answer, we never got a 4th Gen with a 3.4 in America. Starting in 2003 (4th gen Body style) we had the 4.0L 1GR-FE or the 4.7L 1UZ-FE

I moved your post here because in the US our 3rd generation 4runners had the gasoline 3.4 V6 engine.

The 3.4 is a solid powerplant with good power in stock form for the era it was designed in. I would guess that it works a little harder with the extra fat in the 4th gen, but will definitely keep up assuming you don't slap on big, heavy tires without re-gearing your differentials. Is the automatic you have a 4-speed or 5-speed?

it a 5 speed. I dont intend on throwing huge tyres on, but am planning to put on an ARB front bumper and a roof rack. My worry is that this is going to knock the consumption right up. Planning to use the vehicle to get to some very remote areas in Africa, and am still trying to work out if the vehicle is worth keeping (Gasoline here is $1.49 per litre)
