I have a 5th Gen 4Runner and feel underpowered..
Debating on the new Explorer Sport (TT) or the Durnago (5.7)

I was hoping someone has an option for a Supercharger or Turbo for my 4Runner so I wont lose $$ on a Trade..

Any thoughts.??

I was thinking the same thing just the other day as I was lining up at the drag strip. I'll catch those Cayenne Turbo S's one of these days! :vader:

On a serious note, what kind of power are you looking for and is that the most important factor? Have you checked to see what kind of offers you can get for you 4R?

Several.
First, go out on the street and from a dead stop, floor it and keep it there til 60 mph. If you still don't think it has enough acceleration then you need to trade.

Now, you probably won't lose much money on this trade but when you trade the Ford or Dodge on something more dependable you certainly will lose money.

Not looking to catch a Cayenne S, But maybe keep up with my 4th gen V-8.

I was hoping someone tried to modify the FJ/Tacoma TRD and made it work on the 4runner..

Is acceleration alone what you are after? The difference between a 4th Gen V8 and 5th Gen V6 accelerating 0-60 is what... less than 1 second?

All great points.. I actually still have the 4.7 4runner,,, and the 2010 (4.0) my wife drives..
I'm going to test it side my side and see if I can convince her to stay with with the Toyota..
I know she complains of the on-ramp acceleration and highway passing power..

Believe me.. the 2010 is not bad at all !! But always looking for more..

It sounds like she's not used to burying the pedal to get the acceleration she's after. In a torquey V8 you don't really have to try that hard. With a V6, especially a larger vehicle, you have to tell the engine that it's time to go. Also, manual mode may help with on-ramps. I've found that the transmission tends to upshift at inconvenient times which results in having to floor it to get a quick downshift and some resulting acceleration.

If it was my wife, I'd tell her to clean out her purse and the weight savings will make up the difference. But then again, my couch is comfortable.

No, no, no. Have HER test them side by side, and give her the one she wants.

Like 1E said, teach her to stick her foot in it.

I"m just endlessly amazed at the whining about this motor. Granted, you have to LEARN HOW TO DRIVE IT, but it can and will go like he11.

:lmao: What????

Other than the Hemi it was the best performing engine we tried.. And we got a Limited for a great deal...

The FORCE is strong with this one !!! She had a gear-head older brother !
What can I say...... She had me at Hello....... And she drove Stick !

Not slamming anything but I'm honestly just curious about this......

I have a 2007 Honda Pilot and it has a curb weight of 4260 and the 2012 4Runner has a weight of about 4400. Both have v6's.

How does the Honda engine or general design make that truck feel so much lighter and quicker than the 4runner IMO?? Is it that the 4Runner is designed more for towing, higher payloads, etc. than is the Pilot?

The 0-60 times I could find for both vehicles are identical. A car feeling faster and actually being faster are two completely different things. Ask any 90s Pontiac owner. :D

Gearing and throttle-mapping are my guess.

I test drove a '10 Pilot and a '10 4R, and came away with that initial "feeling" too. I was also coming out of my second Pathy, which, along with the Pilot seems to just be (what?) "tuned" differently than the 4R.

I believe they must make torque earlier, even with smaller V6's, because they feel quicker. The PF even moreso - it literally jumped off the line - while my first drive of a 4R left me thinking "pooch".

I now (finally) know how to drive the 4R, and how to manage the throttle to get performance, or not. You cannot be timid with it if you want to go. It IS different from any other vehicle I've owned, gotta admit that. But I like it. My 3.5L Pathy rarely returned better than 16-17 mpg, and my 4R stays at 19 city and 22-23 hwy. Not bad for such a big ol' t-e-r-d.

Will I be tempted by the S/C? Hellya, but I'm a guy, and that's what we do. Even us old 'uns.

I don’t think I’ll ever get these “it needs more power” threads. I learned to drive in a Ford 390 with a quad and it was hard not to light up the tires in it. I've owned several muscle cars and sports cars since then so I know what power is. The T4R is a rare breed, a REAL SUV in an era of cross overs and wanna-be’s. It is designed to give top notch off-road performance and good on-road performance. Remember, it's a SUV not a Trophy Class Baja race truck. Is there room for more power? Sure, but then I think that even race cars have room for more power. Does it NEED more power? No.

My lifted, over-sized-tires, extra weight carrying ’12 TE can easily out accelerate traffic from a stop in a 60mph zone. It can easily get up to speed to allow smooth merging from expressway on-ramps. It can easily over take and pass other vehicles both on expressways as well as 2-lane roads. What else is needed? Maybe if I was towing a 5K lb trailer every weekend I might really want more low-end torque but I don’t and I seriously doubt most people do.

A supercharger or two will be out in the near future to increase the power outputs of these dual vvt-i engines.

Hello......Toyota with the stock 3:73 gearing and weak initial gas pedal action was going for gas mileage since it's all the rage these days with high gas prices. Better gas mileage appeals more to the masses! They weren't trying to build a race truck!

At the time being,re-gearing with 4:56's is the only viable option out right now to improve acceleration and get more torque to the wheels on our 5th Gens. A differential that's lower geared you will have more torque at any given RPM.It's not cheap and there are trade offs like lower mpgs at highway speeds and a lower top speed however !You have to pay to play!

With available Nitro 4:56 gears and stock size tires you would smoke any stock 4th Gen V8 in the 1/8 or 1/4 mile if that's what's your after.Matter of fact ,you would probably smoke the stock tires. I regeared to run taller tires and lower the torque curve though and not to race.I'm done racing and made it out alive! I'm way quicker off the line then I was stock and shifts much smoother even with hundreds of pounds of extra weight in mods and 2+ inch taller tires.

Read and reread this article with engineer mumbo jumbo but skip down to the part that he tells the 3 ways to make a vehicle accelerate faster and that holds true for all vehicles....engine,tranny or diffs! Diff change is all we have right now! Right up 1engineers alley!
"Horsepower v. Torque - which is really more important to the performance of my vehicle?"

My wife has a Volvo xc60 t6 (turbo charged inline6 300hp with325tq mostly at 2100rpm) it will eat the 4r without trying but if you get into the pedal on the 4r it will surprise you even after driving the xc60. You just have abuse the gas pedal and it will get up.and go.
