Looking to buy a 5th gen, looking for some info.

Hey everyone.

I might be considering buying a 5th gen, we owned a 3rd gen for 7 years and a drunk driver recently hit it while it was parked and totaled it.

I am not too familiar with 5th gens other than the fact that KDSS is a must have and the face lift was in 2014.

Some questions...

What exactly are the main differences between the 2010-2013 and the 2014+ models? I know there are a few interior changes, but anything important beside cosmetic changes and the new awesome front end?

What size tires can I run stock with no rubbing (on the street, or on the trail). We have our 33s from our 3rd gen we would swap on if they will fit.

How much should I be looking to pay for a non facelift and a face lift, both with KDSS and nav preferably.

Is the Trail Premium worth it over just the basic Trail? (We are only looking for trail editions).

Thanks everyone, and anything else you guys can add feel free as I do not know much about this model. Also, anyone that is considering selling their 5th gen trail, feel free to PM me as well!

This depends on your lifestyle. For me, no.

As a current 3rd and 5th gen owner, my .02 on the whole thing. The TEP is absolutely worth it. I like that the softex doesn't get really hot in the summer and doesn't get really cold in the winter. Plus if it's too cold for my liking, I can just turn the seat heaters on. For me the extras that came with the premium were absolutely worth it, i.e. the seat heaters. My girlfriend is always cold and that helps keep her warm without turning the 4Runner into a hot box. I may or may not spill things on occasion and the softex is easy to clean up. The newer 14+ have projectors, which is nice to just be able to add the HID to it without any major modifications. No matter what you get you will be happy with the trail, since like the 3rd gens it has the manual transfer case.

Agreed unless the OP is tall. The sunroof costs a couple inches of headroom, which is why I bought the TE. I do agree about the softex seats though, I swapped them into my TE for the reasons you mentioned above. The cloth TE seats are dog and dust magnets.

Oh and personally I absolutely dislike the KDSS and got mine without. But I also plan on heavily modding mine in the future.

if you say kdss two more times.....

What do mean by heavily modding? Long travel? Because lifting a KDSS equipped suspension 3" or less is only slightly more difficult than a non-KDSS.

I plan on going full icon stage 7, full armor, skids, sliders....you know giving it the works. I'll be able to stiffen the front coils up so to avoid the nose dive, and then make adjustments to tailor the on road handling.

Minor detail. 2013+ has a smog pump which a) is another thing to break and b) requires relocation if you want to put a second battery there.

Icon stage 7 works with KDSS. For the money of a icon stage 7 you could buy the following

1. Lift- OME 3" $1000
2. UCA- JBA $500
3. Winch- Warn $900
4. Front and rear bumper- SSO $2600
And still have enough money to put a large dent in cost full skids and slidders.

It's your money.

I just got a '16 limited and loving it. Drives and handles great, up there with my old LR3. I think it's possibly the best mid-sized SUV out there. It has the KDSS which I'm guessing is why it rides so well.

Oh yeah, believe me I have done my fair share of lift research and the icon kit really suits me best. I like the adjustability, and although my girlfriend may not alway be happy about it, I intend on wheeling it just as hard as my 3rd. The only thing I dislike about the icon shocks and coils is that they are not progressive like the Kings. By all accounts the Kings have the best road manner and respond well when pushed hard. Whereas the icons respond best when pushed harder, but have slightly less road manners. KDSS was just not my cup of tea, and almost every lift we can imagine works with the KDSS. I really wish ADS would release a coil and shock for the 5th gen. The tundra guys swear by them more than King and icon. Again just my .02, been researching for about a year what will work best for me and the terrain I plan on tackling.
