Losing my mind: Creaking noise while braking

I need your great minds to help me resolve an issue.

2016 4runner 4wd

I will record a video and post tomorrow, but as of today i am over it as i have already taken apart my rear brakes at least 10 times now.

Issue: Creaking noise while braking on Rear Passenger wheel area. Noise only happens when I push the brakes about 50%. Anything less, no sound.. anything more, no sound.. The noise is consistent with rotation of wheel. Creaks on the dot at 2 points of when the wheel rotates. Noise best described as a floor creaking type of sound.

Things I've already tried:
1. Swapped rims from right to left
2. Swapped rotors from right to left (cant swap pads as they are side specific)
3. Brake cleaned with rotor off all the internal ebrake components
4. Checked for scrape marks, none that i can see.
5. Stripped a f***ing caliper bolt, so i need to swap the caliper bracket tomorrow.

I have no idea what the hell is causing this sound. Truck drives and brakes fine, just irritating as shit to hear it everytime i brake. Creaking noise is none existent when accelerating.

My plans were to buy a new rotor as people kept saying warped rotor was most likely the issue, but swapping rotors right to left and the sound staying on the right side eliminates the possibility of the rotor.

Yes the pads are still the only thing left on that side that havent been moved, but i keep thinking wouldnt the sound be consistent if it were the pads? Consistent meaning always creaking and not at 2 points of a complete wheel spin?

I think next thing to try is brake pad clips, something about possibly rubbing against high points of my rotor, but since the rotors were switched this doesnt make sense either.


What do you guys think?

We are getting a creaking sound, but not quite as you described. Ours is emanating from the piston on the brake pedal. The vehicle only had 113 miles on it when we got it, and still has less than 1000 miles at this point. I "think" it's diminishing, or possibly I'm getting used to it.

If you find your gremlin, please post the solution.

Is yours a creaking or more of a whooshing sound? There is vacuum noise generated by pressing the pedal. It is normal. I can't even hear it over my stereo normally though.

As for the OP, I have no clue.

let's be honest that stupid noise in not normal. Just a Toyota design fault and everyone deals with it .

Yea, sorta like that. It's a little like what you might hear when bleeding the brakes.

I've owned many vehicles over the years, and driven many more. First time I've had one make such a noise. But the vehicle is VERY quiet otherwise. No rattles, clunks, or creaks going along rough sections of roads.

I'm really not concerned about it, and it's not audible unless the windows are up, the blower is on low, stereo off, and nobody is talking... and I'm braking.

It drove me nuts too... my 4th doesn't have it thankfully. My ex just picked up a 5th gen used and we went for a drive, I heard it and it instantly started to drive me crazy again.

Maybe because I have been driving for over 40 years in various vehicles that span 8 decades in technology what seems normal to me isn't to others. As archaic as this beast seems it's a technological marvel compared to that '46 CJ-2A I bought right out of high school. And strangely enough I really miss the simplicity of that old Jeep.

I apologize i should of, but didnt take a video because i was on my own and had no one to hold camera while driving.

Although i do have an UPDATE. I went to buy brake clip retainers as my last resort to fixing this otherwise i would be over it and just have a shop determine if it was the wheel hub making this noise.

I went in to a local auto part store and was told $17.99 for just the retaining clips for pads. I was shocked at the price and said hell no. I asked for brake pad pricing and found out their top of the line brake pad offer comes with retaining clips and goes for $50. Cant beat that, i figured if I'm spending 18$ on clips i mind as well spend the extra difference to knock out two birds with one stone since ill have to take the pads out anyway.

The whole time I'm telling myself that it can't be pads because the sound would be constant and not consistent with wheel rotation.

Long story short, i go to change the pads and retaining clips on both sides since pads come in pairs, wanted them to wear down evenly.

THE NOISE IS GONE..
WTF..

I am not acknowledging this as a win and only a lucky/band aid fix to whatever the hell is the real issue. Although i will say it could be a win because i suspected that the retaining clips could have been the culprit. Its the only thing that makes sense in relation to my issue. A constant creaking noise according to wheel rotation, so when i apply brakes the retaining clips will move slightly toward the rotor then the clips hit the rotor on a high spot and make the noise.

I have no idea at this point and just telling myself to enjoy the ****ing silence.

My god has it never felt so good to hear no noise when braking.

that was short lived. Think its time to find a shop because i really dont have the time/patience to deal with this.
