Lost Keys please please help

Hey all,

So I went snowboarding today and lost my one and only key. It's a '99 Sr5 v6 4x4. I have no keys, no master, no valet, nothing. I can't get a straight answer from the dealer or anyone else on what exactly I need to do to remedy the situation. It's not locked. I just don't have my keys. I'm not rich, and can't exactly afford a multi-thousand dollar hit on this deal. If anyone has ever had a similar situation and can be of any help it would be greatly appreciated.

im not sure about toyota but i had a honda accord and lost my keys . the honda dealer cut me a key from my vin # . or just call a locksmith and have them install a new ignition and key . (probably a couple hundred $)
 
If it is the 'smart' anti-theft key it's a big deal (don't know what year they started that but I have it on my 2002). They have to do something with the ECM (replace it???) - anyway the dealer told me it's about a grand - 'so don't lose the key' (or get a replacement made now for $145 - $50 for the key, $95 to program the ECM), which I have yet to do.:crazy:

Dude. Its like $20 for Toyota dealer to cut a new key.

If you change the locks you've been had.

Bring the vin # and registration with your name on it to Toyota dealer and they w will cut a key.
 
Why only one key? As Brian said, go to the dealer with the title in-hand and registration.

I dated a girl once who had five keys to her car, but all on the same key ring. Smart, book smart, but common sense was apparent only at certain times during the day. So I took one key and left four on there. After we split, she told me to keep the key and would periodically call to drop by for the spare key until she sold the Accord three years later.
 
Well, if it's any comfort, I also have a '99 SR5 and my keys are not chipped. I believe they only came on the Limiteds that year.

I get copies made at the hardware store and I leave my remaining original master at home after my son lost one swimming in a lake with the key in his pocket.
 
Don't freak out to much man. As said above. Go to the dealer with your registration and an ID for your truck. This is what will happen. They will take the Vin and cut a key for you. Now you will most likley have to have it towed into the dealer because they have to have the truck to program the key once it is cut.

If you had the old style key IE all medal one it is pretty cheap. If not I paid 105 bucks out the door for a bran new master key about a month ago.

If you have a chipped key it is a fatter black plastic one.

Just to be clear, there is no need to program a key with no chip. If he does not have a chipped key, and I doubt he does, they will just cut him a new working key he can walk out with. One of the unchipped masters had a black plastic head so he really has no reference to know if his was chipped or not if it had a plastic head. If he had the metal key, then it's obvious there is no chip. '99 SR5 came with one plastic headed master, one all metal master, and one all metal valet key.

Yeah the crappy thing is the key I had was not an original. It didn't have the Toyota logo on it, but it did have a plastic head. I wanna say it said "35R" or something like that on it. I guess I really have no way to know until I get a ride down to Denver and have them make a copy and then come back up and try it. Not trying to freak out, but if it has the engine immobilizer I'm royally screwed.
 
Well I had the Chipped Key so that is all I'm talking from. The 99 LTD was the year they started chipping them all I was told by the dealer. I hope he just has to cut a 8$ key and be ready to go. Let's see what happens.

I know what you mean by a fatter black plastic one, my ex girl had a 07 corolla that had a plastic head and the plastic part was noticeably fatter than my 4runner plastic head. I'd even say twice as thick. I guess there's only one way to find out. If anyone cares to know I'll drop an update once I go down there. thanks for the replies.

That is a standard hardware store copy with no chip made by Hillman group and sold at Lowes ($2.17). You're golden. 35R is the blank number.

Dang dude I'm going from Denver to Keystone tomorrow, would pick it up for you if I could.. but I guess that would involve your proof of ownership. Good luck!
 
Did 3rd gens have a different key for the door and ignition? Mine does, but it was bought at auction so that may be why. Wondering if providing the VIN# to dealership will work for me to get a spare cut. Sorry for thread jack.
