Just wondering if anyone else finds the engine noise from their 5th gen. to be excessively loud. My wife has a 2013 4R that I almost never drive. This weekend we had to go to a graduation that I knew would have tight parting so we took her truck. I would have much preferred to take my F150 but that can be a PIA to park, so off we went in the 4R. As I sated I rarely dive her vehicle, because of multiple reasons but I won’t get in to that now because I know Antman doesn’t like it when someone says something negative about the 4R. Anyway my question is, is it normal for the 5th gen to sound like a diesel with a couple of hundred K on it or does Toyota considered this normal?

Apparently it's normal for the 2010+ 4Runners. You can add me to the list of people that absolutely HATES that damn noise it makes. It's really the only think I dislike about it.
It does make me miss my 4th Gen V8. :crybaby:

This is a roller motor so Loud is actually normal when your talking a roller rocker valve train with 4 camshafts and 3 timing chains turning 5 gears . Roller rockers are considered better and an upgrade vs regular flat tippet valves ...........Roller rocker benefits

They went to this in 2010 and yes this engine is louder then the 4.0 I had in my 06 Runner but was improved by many things and these are the new features in pdf form (hint:the FJ has the same engine) .....View attachment 1GR-FE_Engine (2).pdf
Mine is loud but I listen to music or the radio and it's not louder then that.

I just switched from a crew cab 6.2L truck to a new 4Runner two weeks ago. I haven't noticed the 4Runner being any louder whatsoever. It's also barely louder than our Chevy Traverse. If I hadn't of ever read this thread I would have never noticed or thought that the engine was loud.
Put your man sack back in your wife's purse and stay out of her truck.
Great info Harper, thanks. It’s good to hear that the excessive noise is normal and there is nothing wrong with the truck. I know the 4R is a well built vehicle with excellent resale value. I don’t know what it is but I just can’t seem to warm up to this truck. Perhaps it’s because I only drive it every few months and never really get use to it. The wife drives it everyday and says it the best vehicle she’s ever driven. We live in NH and she has to be to work regardless of the weather and there have been days that she made it to work with ease when many other SUV’s/crossovers would have had a rough time.

I guess coming from a car w/ poor sound insulation (Sub WRX), I find the interior of the T4R to be super quiet in comparison. I have noticed on start up/idle that the engine is loud from outside the car, but I dont notice anything from the interior. Interesting to hear about the engine change on the +10, learn something different every day here.

If you think roller rockers are loud, try driving something with direct injection! The loudest sound from my TDI was by far the injectors!

I just switched from my 2013 F150 FX4 to my 2014 4Runner TE. And yes, these engines are loud and especially under WOT. Also not much power relative to what I am used to, probably more power than what others are used to, but plenty for most. However, I agree that the engine is louder than the F150s, and I have to add that it is actually a tad louder than my son's 4th Gen 4Runner too.
Having said that, I recommend you drive your wife's 4Runner more often to really appreciate what these trucks are like. I love how mine feels and drives, and love the fact I can park anywhere I want now...lol...and the fact that I actually have a better trail vehicle when I go off road instead of my big 4x4 trucks yet still have plenty of room to pack the family and gear. And while there may be more engine noise, there is less overall intrusive road/tire noise than the F150s.
My fix is to try an aftermarket exhaust system as I enjoy the sound of a more purposeful exhaust and will compliment any other contributory noises...lol.
