Lower Ball Joint Failure questions

The ball looses its grease or the phenolic plastic looses its lube quality’s and the ball joint seize’s and the power of the steering pump breaks it off.

Simple, I grease mine every oil change never been a problem.

You grease the oem ball joints?

No when they fail I buy ball joints that are greaseable.

Im 55 years old and been wrenching since I was 10. Never done me wrong except for the Moog balljoints that got water in them and rusted in the D60 front axle of my and my Ex wife’s Dodge Rams with the cummins.

You could remove the rubber dirt seal and try to grease it with a needle attachment.

That would probably extend the life of the oem ball joints. Especially if off roading and major mudding.

Ah.

Well I was going to say I always wondered if you could just simply pump grease up to that gap between the bolt and the boot

You could use a Needle Injector on your grease gun. I think I'm going to give it a shot. I pretty much only use my 3rd Gen for wheeling these days.

You know it really makes me wish that we could get a quality manufacturer to make a greaseable lower ball joint out of quality materials.

One can dream...

Speaking of gracing it, do you guys think there's any point in adding extra grease to a new one before you install it? Or would this not help at all?

The goal is to keep water and mud out of the joint. The grease helps in accomplishing it. :)

Probably depends on how they are used. For example: I need to find a recept. I think my moogs have over 60k miles on them of on road use with stock rims and still within spec. They are greasible.

If you could find the oem mfg for toyota and see if they make a greasible one for the aftermarket. Then you probably have what your after.. :)

However notice I said on road use and stock rims and tire size. Not oversized rims and major off road use.

The 555 Japan brand at napa is greaseable and they claim OEM which I interpret as “at one time we made them for Toyota”

I have a 555 on the drivers and a CarQuest on the passenger.

Someone with an OEM joint on a shelf needs to remove the rubber cap and see if a grease needle fits anywhere useful to get grease under the joints ball.

I can do this when here in the next several weeks when I do the swap. Not really wanting to mess with the new ones but I can definitely take apart the old ones. Plus it will be interesting to see what the old ones look like after 75k miles

You remember all the 555 threads let that horse be dead. lol
I installed the Moogs for being greasable got totaled 6 months later can't report figured they'd have some life.
Greasable BJ's Swaybar endlinks and other apps force grease from backside of ball out boot taking any dirt with it.
Getting grease to the load side of ball what you after won't happen greasing from boot side You buy that ?

Here’s some shots of the work the mechanic did. Toyota LBJ’s and new bolts. As well as other parts.

Some balls have a groove on the bottom to distribute the grease that one may be able to find by pulling the stud to the side. If it’s there a needle may fit down that groove to the underside.

My rig came with CarQuest joints that were greaseable but the kid I bought it from never installed the zerks and cranked them full of grease. It didn’t help he had installed two right hand LBJs instead of a right and left.

I know the boy off roaded with it cause 4 years later I still have silt on my drivers side running board when it rains. That caused the drivers side to start squeaking. I was able to grease them but the drivers side had a ton of resistance pumping grease into it. But the grease made the noise go away and steering got easier until I replaced it.

Grease gallies gotta have em on ball or in seats Zerk right spot way it works. Yep.
Not Yota balls, in hand or pics of yet to see a gally, seats had 100% contact with ball no place for grease.
Only benefit I see is keeping a grease barrier between elements and stud side ball n seat.
My $.02 and we all got $.02 lol.
