lumbar support 'crunching'

Has anyone had this issue been reported in any 2011's yet? I got my 2011 a few months ago and it doesn't have it (although only 2000 miles so far), but I was test driving used 2010's and immediately noticed in two different 4runners the lumbar had a crunching noise as I shifted around in the seat.

Mine is a 2011. Have the problem and an incompetent dealer that gives me all the stupid excuses in the book to avoid the problem.

Mines a 2011.

This lumbar support looks like it was over engineered by the japanese engineer from Germany.Germans are famous for over engineering! It has a little electric motor that pulls a cable that slides the plastic up two rails. WTF???

I fixed mine when I had the cover off by putting a 2"x2" piece of foam about a foot long behind it creating my own lumbar support. The lumbar is right for me now and quiet so I leave it alone.I added some strips of foam on the bolsters too to fit me a little better.

It's real easy to get at this bolster thing-a-ma-jiggy if you don't like to mess with dealers like me. That bottom flap on the lower back of your seat has a elastic band that wraps around the springs underneath. Take it loose and the flap comes up revealing the ends of the zippers for the seat cover.Unzip both sides a foot or two and wala, there it is.

well as I guessed... my useless dealership told me they couldn't duplicate the problem and therefore didn't put it into the system...so I'm going to just call Toyota when I do my questionnaire and report it...I swear as soon as I'm done with my free service I'm going to do my own service...such a waste of my time...as the saying goes "If you want something done right, do it yourself!" ...any whoooooooo

on to rant about my other issue in another post...

2011 Limited With Same Problem

My 2011 Limited has the same problem. Taken to two dealers. First one couldn't find. Second one the technician confirmed the crunch, documented it, but now the manager needs to check since I guess Toyota doesn't trust their technicians. Unfortunately, alot of run around and still not fixed. But it has sure reduced my excitement for the 4-Runner. I have owned 6 of them, and the service and quality on the 2011 is the worst.

Took mine to my dealer, they ordered a new seatback. I asked if it was the 'new design' but the advisor didn't know. Hopefully they are only sending the new style parts. My dealership (Toyota of Richardson) seems pretty easy to work with, so if you are in the DFW area, and are having issues, try them.

Lumber support crunching

OK Guys took the 4runner in for it's 15,000 service and told them about the lumber support problem at first they could not find it so I took a test drive with them and they felt it so they put the part on order I told about them about this thread on the forum so they could use it for reference lets see what happens the tech told me it's the motor in the lumber support I told him I think it's more then that.

The lumbar crunch is the only problem I've had so far. Please let me know what happens at Toyota of Richardson. That's where I go for service, too. If you remember your SA's name that would be great. Maybe he'll remember the fix when I take mine in!

I've been hoping to see folks get a permanent fix for this problem.

have you tried contacting Toyota via Twitter?

thanks, i just showed these parts to the dealer, theyre going to look into it. they said. what do you mean by the fender flare? mines a little loose, wondering if its the same thing. thanks

Just dropped mine off today for my 15k service and I showed my guy the photo with all the part numbers for the "new" seat back. Also told them about the headlight hazing, Ill post back later when I hear from the dealer.

Seatback Replaced

Had the servere crunching problem. My dealer just replaced the seat back mechanism. It did take multiple visits and persistance. I will post if the problem resurfaces.

Unfortunately I'm sure it will, mine has. Lasted about 3K before it started up again with the new seatback.

Here's a request to everyone who has this issue: please report it to your dealer if you haven't already. I reported it today but specifically requested that they didn't "fix" it by ripping my seat apart and putting in the same defective design.

If Toyota hears about this then hopefully they will redesign the mechanism and issue a TSB so that we can all get an upgraded unit.
