MAF Sensor cleaning to improve gas mileage!

I cleaned my MAF yesterday using CRC MAF cleaner spray. I disconnected the battery expecting that there is a slight MPG increase, so to reset the system.
After cleaning the MAF, it now idle at approx 750, before it was 1000-1200.
Is it normal? or which is normal for a V8 ?..
(I'll be cleaning th throttle body this weekend, and will probably rip off the Hydro Carbon Filter)

Thanks for the pics and info. My wif'es 03 V8 4R stalled on her this weekend. The problem was the battery died (over 4 years old) and I replaced the battery but just turned it over once. She took the truck out and it stalled on her for the first time since we bought it. I figured the ECU was relearning and that caused the stall. Any way she wanted to make sure so we took it to the dealer and after 89 bucks they said the same thing.... The wanted another 30 bucks for MAF cleaning and another 54 for TB cleaning. I said no thanks and left after essentially paying 90 bucks to learn what I already knew (however wife felt better). I read this post and got the CRC MAF cleaner and cleaned it tonight. Great pics and when I removed mine (first time and 72K on truck) it was black. Sprayed this stuff on and there is actually silver showing now! Plugged MAF back in and also reset ECU by pulling battery cbl. Rode it for about 20 minutes and now the truck at idle is like 600 RPM. Can't even hear the engine. Pretty impressive how little in expensive things can help the truck operate. Thanks again for the writeup and pics.

I hadn't done this at all and my '03 has 115,000 mi. on it. I pulled the MAF out tonight and the sensor was a solid black ... in fact, it looked like one big wire with a black end on it. I sprayed it out tonight and it back to looking nice and shiny, not to mention having two wires this time. I'm letting it dry out and will re-install it later tonight and take it out for a test drive. Between this and replacing the O2 sensors tomorrow, I'm optimistic that gas mileage and performance will both improve and that the irritating VSC lights will go away for good!
From now on, this will get cleaned whenever the air filter gets replaced. I've definitely learned my lesson!
UPDATE: Just got back from a test drive and what a difference. Definitely runs better, performs better and better gas mileage. It won't ever get this bad again!

Can this MAF cleaner be purchased at a local auto parts store?

Hi everyone. I recently went to check the air filter on my '91 runner. I unclipped the brackets took out the filter, it was moderately dirty. I vacuum cleaned it, and put it back. I then went to unscrew the two small screws holding in the sensor on top of the air filter unit just to see if it was something that easily detached, thinking that was how the wire connector was attached to the MAF sensor. I probably shouldn't have done this. Realizing that, I put it back. Everything was put back how it was. BUT NOW THE TRUCK WON'T START!!! It cranks and catches for about a second, sometimes two, but then dies. The ignition seems to be fine, and the battery power is fine. Can anyone shed some light on this problem? I really need to remedy this fast. Any help would be great. Thanks!

Try this: disconnect the electrical connection, inspect for dirt or other problems and then re-connect. It sounds as if you are getting no signal at all from this sensor.

@MikesToy: CRC MAF cleaner for $1.99 ? I just paid 6.99 + tax for mine! Gonna go check out autozone tomorrow !
According to the video the intake on the FJ is referred to as a cold air intake, this looks really similar to the stock V6 4R intake so is would that be considered a cold air intake as well?
Also the video only shows cleaning the obvious part which is what looks like two wires coming together at a soldered connection. What about the metal wires inside the sensor?

Just went to pep boys and autozone last night, both were at $6.99.
I sprayed and sprayed, full tank still reads lower than my liking, 340 so no change here. I spoke with an employee at auto zone who has a theory, run the tank till its empty empty and then use BP to fill it all the way up, mid grade. Who knows, might work, might not but either way it won't cost me any more than I'd need to anyway.
Oh also put a can of Sea Foam into a full tank as someone suggested. Nothing yet other than idle is at 700 RPMs. Didn't really take note of the idle RPM before the MAF sensor cleaning & the Sea Foam so can't say for sure whether it made a difference or not but I'm sure it didn't hurt.
1/24 UPDATE: Ran the truck till it showed 0 on the range then filled the tank with 89 OCTANE BP. New range says 324. Hand calc MPG for this one is 273.8/20.445 = 13.39 MPG
