Magnaflow or Flowmaster?

T4Rs,

Looking at putting in new muffler and tip into 4th generation V6. Talked with an exhaust guy who said v6 with flowmaster may sound too pitchy and car would rumble too much. He suggested to go MagnaFlow. What model should I get? What tip should I get? Clamp or Weld matter?

I have had both, the magnaflow is not made to give you sound, its main design is to give better flow and a side effect is a mild sound change. Flowmaster is designed to give you a louder sound and the side efect is a little better flow.

So if you want sound go with FM if you want less sound and better flow, go with MF..

IMO the Fm sounds great on the V6 and the V8 T4R they both sound a litttle tinny at high RPMs....

As far as clamp or weld....not sure there is a "better" one, I have only ever had custom welded.
 
30 years ago a custom exhaust could improve gas mileage and performance...but NOT in today's engines. They are highly tuned from the manufacturer. Today you buy one for looks or sound. Performance and mileage improvements are a thing of the past.
 
IMO, if your fine with it being a little loud you could go with a similar setup to mine. I have received may complements on how my V6 sounds. I have a single-in-single-out flow 40, rear resonator replaced by curled pipe going out the side behind the back right tire, and took out the rear two cats(4runners have 4 cats).

Beretta shot, would you agree that it sounds pretty good?
 
Well not sure as to the cost of the flow 40 since my brother had given it to me from his old Tacoma, so its about 6 years old. But the rest of the work was just the cost of welding. So however much your local welder/exhaust shop charges for the work.

Its probably the Original 40 Series - Two Chamber Mufflers on this website: Performance mufflers its about 2/3 down the page.
 
i have the v6 with Flowmaster 50 SUV series catback exhaust, sounds great, deep throaty for a V6,,, not a jeep sound like a mangnaflow would do.

I have audio clips i can send you of my exhaust if you would like to hear them

if I had a v6, I would probably go the same route. I have listened to alot of good Yokem advice on exhaust setups lol (all three times I've gone to lites to redo my exhaust has been bc of Charles lol)
 
i just want muffler with aggresive sound but not too loud inside car. dont want to get into pipes only because it'll get pricey. and then just a nice tip to weld on. so FM 40 or 50 series with or without resonator?
 
The 40 is one of their loudest mufflers. I think you should stay away from that if you don't want a lot of sound in the cabin.
 
Definitely go with a flowmaster single-in-single-out, 40 if you want loud, haven't heard 50 but i bet it sounds good as well just a little less aggressive. It might have something to do with the length or maybe the way our V6 is setup but exhaust sounds great on V6 4runners in my opinion.

If you do the resonator cutoff it will make it slightly louder(just barely) but will allow you to sweep your exhaust out to the side which will help to eliminate the rotten egg smell. I can roll my window down and not have the smell unless it it full pedal to the floor.

50 series has a third chamber to reduce the interior noise as opposed to the 2 chamber in the 40. most all flows are designed to reduce interior noise though when you do research. i just ordered the super 44 its said to have the most aggressive and throaty tone as far as all there designs. check out youtube they have a ton of sound clips for both magnaflow and flowmaster. <****in catalina wine mixer>
 
If you have a good audio system on your computer it sounds BEAST like in person! stock computer speakers wont do it justice, if you dont have a system, borrow someones to listen!

On any new Toyota engine, go for the sound you like. If you're going for power, you're looking at the wrong area with a new muffler. The muffler isn't the restriction in the system.... start with the 3 cats if you're looking for raw power. without getting headers you're looking at so little power you should probably just pick a sound you like. I REALLY don't like the sound of most maglaflow systems, so I'd presonally pick the Flowmaster 50 SUV since it really does sound good and the 50 isn't too loud.

I've had Magnaflow on 2 cars and never been satisfied whether it's a 4x9 or 27" truck muffler... just doesn't sound right to me and seems to drone when broken in.
