Maintenance at 150K miles?

Hey there fellow T4Rs,

So, the Runner is pushing 150K miles...I think it is about 146K right now.

I am having to take it into the shop tomorrow, as when I am at high speed and accelerating, there is vibrations in a wah wah kind of way (I know that doesn't make sense to anyone). There is no vibrations at idle, braking, or even at lower speeds. I read a little bit online, and sounds like it is the U-joint? Not sure though so I will find out tomorrow. (Any input on this would be helpful too!)

The main reason behind this post, is to see what all of you experienced T4Rers feel is necessary and optional maintenance at that 150K mile mark.
I am sure that a list of maintenance items that have already been done would help, but unfortunately I am not home to access the records of the 4Runner.

I have a 2000 supercharged 4runner...no fuel upgrades at the moment, but those will be coming soon enough..(anyone in the Bay Area want to help install a URD 7th Injector Kit? I will supply beer and food!!)

Any high level inputs would be very helpful, as I would love to see this baby last a long time! Any maintenance issues/items that you guys have performed around the 150K mile mark would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the help and look forward to reading the responses!

Ryan

No idea what you have had done to the thing but...

- New radiator or external cooler, depending on what camp you're in
- Spark plugs
- Spark plug wires
- Differential oil
- Fuel filter
- Hopefully you've done a timing belt/water pump at this point?
- Ball joints
- Headlight fluid
- Muffler bearings

:D

I agree with wooden payload. I would look at replacing all fluids, diffs, transmission, transfer case, brakes, and coolant should go along with a new radiator if it's never been done (or if you plan to bypass the trans fluid cooler in the radiator with an external, you can keep the old radiator)...
Timing belt and water pump if it's never been done, and getting close to a 2nd one if you're running 80k intervals (don't know when/if you've already done it in the past)
Also, if you get under the vehicle and grab the driveshaft and try to move it, it should have no play whatsoever at the u joints. If you do, they're bad. Mine are bad right now and I experience higher speed vibrations all through the truck, although I have to say just greasing all the zerks on the u joints really helped dull the vibrations, and some days it's hardly noticeable - just until I can fix them properly.
Also, don't let a shop rip you off for doing something you can do. If they're bad and you don't feel confident enough to replace them, well that's a lil bit different, but you should be able to determine on your own if they're bad. If not, then you can start looking at other potential issues and maybe at that point take it to a shop... but personally I'd rather work on my rig myself no matter the issue. Most jobs only require gradeschool knowledge and a bit of common sense.

Wooden has a pretty good list. I had vibration problems at the same mileage. I cured them with:

-rack bushings
-new tires, road force balanced
-new shocks all around (Trekmasters)
-alignment

It seemed each of these raised the onset of vibration about 10mph. Now I can get up to 95mph and still solid, which is as fast as I ever drive this thing.

You should also check inner and outer tie rod ends, sway bar bushings, sway bar end links--they may be due, too.
