Maintenance light on after 1000 miles after oil change?

I had my oil changed on my 2004 4-Runner about 1000 miles ago and the MAINTENANCE light has come on two days ago. Checked the oil, it is fine.

However, after driving awhile and stopping the engine smells "hot", BUT the temperature gauge is at its normal level.

I called Toyota service at my dealer and he said if the temp. gauge registers normals not to worry about the "hot" smell.

Another variable is that I just turned over 64,000 miles, but to my knowledge there is not a scheduled maintenance until 75K.

Could this be that the coolant is low?

Any ideas about what is going on?

The maintenance light is just really a reminder, it doesn't key off any sensors on the truck. I think they go on about every 4000-4500 miles since the last time it was reset. It seems you may have had the oil change at 63k, and now coming at 64k the maintenance light went on. It probably went on to remind you to do the 65k service?

If you search the forum, you can find the instructions to reset the light. It should be in your manual also.

In reference to the "hot" smell, have you measured your oil level? Any oil puddle under the truck in the garage/driveway? Have you checked the engine bay for signs of spilled oil? The techs could have spilled a bit of oil on the engine and the smell is from it burning off?

Either way, it's just a reminder. It blinks from ~5,000 miles to 7,500 miles, then solid after that.

Yup resetting it should have been done by dealer - but very simple. It is covered in the Owner's manual too. The oil smell - I'd check to ensure they put filter on properly as well as the drain plug and its gasket. Sounds like sloppy oil change - dealer or IFFY lube? They should have wiped up excess if spilled when they drained it.
