Manual Hub Conversion on a 3rd gen

ORS did leave their site up for the tech articles though. I know back in 08 they said some things maybe carried by other vendors but I have not heard about it.

"Sonoran Steel's site has all the details. But in short you will need all components less the center chunk from a base model 4wd tacoma. You can reuse your spindles and something else forgot the tech. name. No I notice no difference or increased economy. Well if I had to do it over I would just skip the hubs and go with an ARB to tell you the truth. Almost the same money."

Not trying to beat it up, but I know his thread pretty well. Its probably my favorite build thread/4runner out there.

I'm not doing it for economy. Although, if I grab a mile or two in MPG's that would be great. I'm doing it because I can. I also think there is no reason for that stuff to be turning all the time.
It isn't going to really cost me anything unless I get lazy and farm out the press work.

The evidence backs it up pretty easily. With manual locking the hubs, you are not having to "push" the CVs, drive flanges, unit bearings etc to get yourself going when leaving a stop. This is why most 4x4 drivers suffer much lower MPGs in the city compared to a 2wd since they are constantly having to push these parts to get it rolling.

On the contrary, a manual locking hub has no more rolling resistance than a 2wd. The only exception being the Tcase which is direct drive in 2hi. My 2000 4runner started life as a 2wd. I routinely got 22-23mpg on the hwy. This was real world MPGs. Not, a "I once got this with a tail wind" analogy.
Now, my 4runner is SAS'd on 37s with a supercharger. However, I have manual locking hubs up front. I most definitely know and feel when my hubs are locked up front. I easily lose 3mpgs on every tank when I drive this way. This is FACT based on my Scan Gauge. And it honestly doesn't matter whether I am in 2wd or 4wd when this happens.

Now, it just so happens that I had this exact conversation with a customer who came in with a 2000 Tacoma today. He drove in a 5VZE 5spd with manual locking hubs. I asked him about his MPGs. He said that with his hubs unlocked he routinely got 21-22mpg on the hwy. However, when in the winter he locks his hubs and just drives with them locked and usually sees his MPGs closer to 17mpg. Nothing else changes. I also asked if a lot of his driving was in 4wd and he explained that he rarely drives in 4wd unless absolutely necessary.

Here is one more piece of evidence. I have owned several 88-95 4runners. I have done many manual hub conversions on these 4runners. In each case, whether it was a 22re or 3.0L, I saw a drastic difference in mpgs. I am talking 2-3mpg better with the hubs unlocked than with the original drive flanges installed. There is also a noticable increase in acceleration or holding power with the hubs installed.

Plain and simple is that you can feel the drag of the car when the hubs are locked. It is very noticeable.

I've read through Steve's manual hub swap along with tons of other threads but didn't see an answer to my question so bare with me.

Do you re-use your 4runner spindles or do you need the Tacoma spindles? I've read through so many threads that it's starting to get foggy on probably the simplest things. There was mention that if you want to keep your ABS you need Tacoma spindles w/ABS which are pretty much non-existent, is that correct? I plugged in a part number for 4wd Tacoma spindles w/ABS from another thread and came up with new spindles on Toyota parts websites but also some 2WD Tacoma spindles with the same part #; are the spindles for 2WD and 4WD the same or did I run into some bunk info? One last brain buster... I just replaced my front axle seals and put new bearings in, are the seals just a maintenance thing to do while you're in there? Bearings call for replacement because they are pressed in with the hub or are the Tacoma bearings different for the manual hubs?

Lots of questions on an old thread so my apologies in advance, just trying to wrap my head around this before I invest too much time and money into it. Thanks.

btw - I have a '98 4runner SR5 4WD.

Easiest thing to do is to simply use the tacoma spindle/knuckle and be without abs.

If you want abs and your 4runner has abs, you will need to press the hub out of the tacoma knuckle to reuse. You will need new bearings and you will basically press the manual tacoma hub into the 4runner knuckle with new bearing.

This manual conversion is something I'd like to do, considering I want to make my 4x4 1998 more fuel efficient, but still have the wheeling capabilities. I don't wheel that hard, probably never will, so I'm not too worried about the CV stuff.

It sounds like you have the swap figured out for the most part. I too considered the manual hub swap on my 4Runner as I was able to snag the required components for free from a guy who was going to SAS on his Tacoma. I decided against it though as the parts especially the CVs might come in handy for the Tacoma once I get it built up for wheeling.

I was planning on buying some ABS spindles from a salvage yard just so I could do all of my press work before hand and retain ABS. The bearings are the same but there have been a few different part numbers for both of them over time.

The original 4Runner bearing part number was 90369-54001.

The original Tacoma bearing part number was 90080-36071.

They have both since been replaced with 90369-54002.

90080-36071 - OEM Toyota BEARING

90369-54001 - OEM Toyota BEARING

Too bad you aren't closer I have the tool to remove the ring/nut.

OEM complete axles

I'm having trouble determining the OEM correct part number for the correct manual hub axle assembly to use in my 2002 4Runner that I did a manual hub swap. The ADD is still active....... For clairity my spindle and hub swap is done years ago, I just need new axles.

This is the number I came up with from a 2000 Tacoma 2.7L base model

43430-04010-84 Axle Assy, Tacoma, w/o auto disc. diff..

I currently have aftermarket axles that have failed and would like to replace them with OEM while they are available.

That's the one. Pretty sure even the ones you order from Toyota places are remans which is why the dealers want a core.

Manual hubs were available on 95-01 Tacomas. Early years like 95-97 they were mostly on regular cab stripped models, as the years went on and you got into the later models they were more and more common on xtracabs with more options.
