Manual shift t-cases?

As I start looking at 5th gen's, I've noticed a few that look like they have a manual t-case lever ( although it looks really short in length) and some have a twist dial like a 4th gen. Are there certain models or trim levels that only have the manual shift lever?

Trail/Off Road

Because we are cool (It looks manual but its not)

TRD OR/Trail but I'm pretty positive is a mechanical linkage. They would not design an electric shifter you can miss and grind with. Or maybe they would either way I'm 95% positive it's mechanical just based on feel alone.

Its all over the forums its an electronic actuator.

Mine doesn't feel like anything when shifting. I have to check the dash to make sure it went in 4WD.

I've seen it at least 10 times. Whats the minimum to hit to be considered all over?

That doesn’t matter at all.

You said it was electronic as if it was common knowledge.
But that’s wrong. regardless of whatever you’ve read.

The electronic ADD has to engage, but the linkage to the shifter is mechanical.

If it's not mechanical then Toyota should win some sort of award for the simulation. It vibrates. It rocks back and forth under load. They even came up with bogus part numbers to coincide with all the fictitious mechanical parts...

I got a lot of things that vibrate but aren't mechanical but we will stop there.

I wish the lever gave more feedback because I'm always guessing if I'm in 4WD or not. Its too smooth if you can actually complain about that.

Just in case the OP doesnt see it, the mechanical lever comes with the Trail/Offroad trim.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the lever is mechanical in nature but still the tcase requires some electronic components for it to switch/operate.

Also safe to assume if it has the lever, it has a locking rear differential and multi terrain select.

If it has a dial knob, it doesn't.

The shift forks move manually, but there are electronic sensors for position

Weird to hear it described as so smooth it doesn’t feel like anything. Wondering what I’ve been doing wrong for 10 years. I would trade my lever for a dial for ease of use.

Mine is nowhere near smooth and requires a decent bit of effort. But I've also only had it 2 months.

You aren’t doing anything wrong. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve had it. I can shift into 4 high while rolling and it shifts pretty easy. I do use a good bit of force to go to 4-lo or else I’ll grind some gears.

It's also not just the offroad models. My 2012 has one and it's just a run of the mill SR5 premium. And it's definitely manual. You can tell by feeling it while you are driving. However, the actuator still has to kick in in the front axle to actually engage 4wd - which is electrical.

I was looking for that. Didn't want to argue without it.

But, ya you can grind the gears if your being a dummy. If your phone cord rests on the lever (steel braided) it will sing the song of the transfer case into the cab. That was my only argument without the diagram ha.
