Manual Tranny Fluid Brands?

4Running Daily

Plan on changing my Manual Transmission fluid this weekend, anyone have a favorite brand. I changed my BMW Manual Tranny Fluid with Royal Purple and did feel a slight difference? Anyone have a brand that will get the best "smoothness"?

P.S.
Dear 4-Ripcord:
Yes I did indeed search before making this new thread. Just thought I would let you know because you call me on it everytime I make a new thread. :hunter:

The only brand I will ever use in a manual trans ever again is Redline GL-4 The one to use in the Toyota is MT-90 Red Line Synthetic Oil - Gear Oil for Manual Transmissions - MT-90 75W90 GL-4 Gear Oil Safe for brass synchros, as it lacks the reactive sulfurs found in most GL-5 oils that cause damage.

My trans was getting hare to shift, especially when sitting still. After a few hundred miles it started shifting easier. It kept getting better. Did it fix the damage already caused by the GL-5 that I used to use? No, but it did ease the ill effects of the damage.

Spend the money and do it right.

Did you see this one in your searches? http://www.toyota-4runner.org/maintenance/76100-manual-trans-gear-oil.html
It pretty much answers your question. BTW, its better to post in existing threads than to start a new one..

And the reason I (and others) keep getting on your case about it is becuase you have a whopping 12 threads in only 62 posts. Maybe more threads, as I know at least one of your MANY "head gasket" threads were deleted. All were saying is Take a pause for the cause, geez.

Consider yourself lucky there are people that continue help you despite your persistant ignorance. Like Gerdo here, I admire your patience my friend.

Since I didn't post in the other thread, I will here ... Redline Lightweight Shockproof is my go to fluid for anything with gears in it. I've used it in all of my Toyota manual trans with great success.

Have you been using the Red Line MT 90? Do you love it?

(LOL at Ripcord being the thread police) :hello:

Yep! I'm still using it. My manual transmission is basically ****ed though. Won't go into first from a stop. Difficulty getting into second at high RPM's and 4th at low RPM's. It eats clutches every 35k miles and the throwout bearing starts to squeal 2k miles after being replaced. I need to find another R150f and swap it in.

Sorry to hear about your trans. I've never heard of a R150f failing. Are you using quality parts for the throwout bearing & clutch? I replaced my master clutch cylinder when it started getting sticky changing gears & it fixed the problem. I would give Marlin a call.

So far I've replaced both cylinders, clutch, flywheel & throwout bearing.
it's a little tough going into 1st but I haven't changed the fluid in a long time. I'm hoping switching to Red Line this weekend will fix that. Switching to a short throw shifter is in my future as well.

Ask fellow member COB if he still has one up for sale.

Marlin was the first clutch that failed. Aisin and other OEM brands. I've replaced the master cylinder and slave cylinder multiple times. The problem is somewhere inside the transmission.

What the hell? Why? How many miles ? I got a r150f that had like 250k and its tits.

I was thinking of just using this gear oil for the diffs, transmission, and transfer case. Does anyone see any issues with this?

Agree with others: MT-90 is good, and lasts a very long time.
Toyota says use 75W-90 for both trans and ADD front diff.

It is a 5 speed. I had no idea what GL-5 was until you commented on my post.

Would it be safe to use GL-4 in everything?

You should "quote" people when you want a reply so they get a notification.
I would not use GL-4 in the T/C & Diffs. GL-5 has the sulfur additives to help protect the big gears where high torque is being applied. Will it work, sure for a while but your gears will wear out faster & eventually snap some teeth. That would be an expensive repair when you could have just bought 2 different gear oils instead of trying to save $20. The only reason I know this is because I just did the research last week thinking I could find one gear oil for everything.

This PDF does a good job of explaining the two.

I was just hoping I could use 1 type of oil to cover everything for simplicity.
Thank you for the information and explanation, two types of oil will be used when I get around to replacing the fluids :)
