Hi Everyone my 4cyl 5speed 4runner is making a funny noise from the trans it seems like it is whining in 1st 3rd and 5th it has a lot of miles in 5th from the hiway and makes absolutely no noise in 4th but when you shift into 5th it starts to whine oh and my shift lever is also pretty sloppy in gear, you can move the lever around a fair bit
Any Ideas?

Thanks

I had something very similar in m 87 4Runner. Ended up destroying the tranny on Christmas day at my families house. Its the idler (or AUX or overdrive) shaft inside the tranny At least that is what I remember it being called. The reason you don't notice anything in 4th gear is because it is the only gear that doesn't use the shaft and is a direct connection through the tranny. Be careful how long you drive it like that because when it goes it blew the front seal off my tranny and the fluid started leaking out pretty quick.

You can try changing out the shifter seat to see if that changes the noise at all. It probably won't but it will cure the sloppy shifter.

My 91 pickup did the same thing. Was noisy in all gears except for 4th. Kinda sounded like change it a dryer and changed more with engine rpm rather than road speed. It did it when it was in neutral and the clutch out too. I drove it for a while until it finally lost 2nd and 3rd gear i finally just swapped in a used transmission.

If i were you, i'd start searching out a used trans. Is yours 4wd?

its the bearings, 4th gear is a 1:1, so its basically a direct drive. i have had this issue in 2 different 5spd toyota pickups, had both trans rebuild, everything was good inside other than the bearings on both tranys. but if your in there, its not gonna hurt to replace everthing else.

-now i had my father inlaw do them both for me, and so i just paid for the cost of parts and paid for him and mother inlaw to go have a nice dinner. but yeah he was the one who told me what it was, and had seen it several times, and rebuilt numerous different ones. both my trans' had roughly 250k on them btw.

yes its a 4wd

ok so If I decide to swap out with a used trans will a 3rd gen V6 4wd manual trans work (does it have same gear gatios?) or will it HAVE to be a 3rd gen 4cyl 4wd trans OR will a 4cyl 4wd Tacoma Trans work

What are my Trans Choices?? :thanks:

Not synchros, bearings... And not sure on trans interchangeability... I'm pretty sure a v6 trans won't work though, any 3rz manual trans will work, Tacoma or 4runner.
