Manual Transmission Slipping

My 5 speed manual transmission on my 98 SR5 4Runner is starting to slip when driving up steeper grades. It has 268,000 miles. I've felt it briefly every now and then for the last year but wasn't sure it was the transmission or something else causing a miss or something. I replaced the plugs initially. This weekend it clearly slipped a couple of times when downshifting on relatively steep uphill highway grades.

Should the 4Runner need anything other than new clutch plates to fix the slipping? What can I expect that to cost? Should I take it to a Toyota dealership or a local garage? They both seem to have been reasonably fair and performed previous work okay.

call them any ask for cost.. you will want flywheel clutch disk and pressure plate and throwout bearing. good time for trany flush too

Best price i found on a clutch kit was from rockauto. It was made by Aisin in Japan. I wanted the marlin crawler kit but it was out of stock with no eta. If you take it to a private shop it might be cheaper to supply your own parts, some shops have a hell of a mark up on parts. On another note, where's the trails at here in Md? We usually ride up in Pa in the trevorton/schmokin area and we hit Hatfield Mccoy every year. Would be nice to hit some trails closer to home.

yep I love my marlin kit and rebuilt w59 trans, but after 8 months I am STILL waiting for some logos and small parts that i have PAID for.....
Their customer service is total BS. I have called over 70+ times and have only got through once and the guy was very rude and stuck up. Sent countless emails and faxes with no reply.

I agree. I'm on their emailing list to be notified when their clutch kit is available but no email yet and that was almost a year ago. I'm happy with the OEM replacement Aisin kit from rockauto. I tow a travel trailer with my 3.4L 1st gen tacoma 4x4 and the clutch has performed great.

I don't have time to do it myself. If I did I would go hunting or dirt riding more than I do.ray2:

This list is getting beyond my vehicle repair abilities. I do a lot of my own work but I wear a white collar so I have to draw the line somewhere. I guess I have to look at the repair manual and compare each part number to the illustration.

What should all this cost from a dealer or local shop approximately?

This is tempting but I will probably just stick with factory replacement parts. My 4Runner has been very good to me and it has always done what I needed it to except the eight or so times I've gotten high centered in deep snow. That has always been in the driveway though and I just took a few minutes to dig it out

I use my 4 wheel drive as needed for hunting, dirt riding and getting to and from work in the snow. I ride my bike where rock crawlers crawl.

There's no place nearby anymore. My friends and I got our bikes plated and we ride in GW National Forest, Greenridge SP, Bald Eagle SF in PA near State College, and we've trailered our bikes to Colorado, Utah and Wyoming. I've never been to Hatfield McCoy but it sounds like it's become too shredded and washed out for me. With plated bikes we can ride trails, jeep trails and forest service roads. They're all fun.

You can still ride at Trevorton/Schamokin? We used to ride on the other side of I81 near Lewellyn before the greenies got control of the area and made it worthless.:barf:

I've also taken my bike to Tennessee a few times and ridden with friends at Windrock and ridden by myself in Chuck Swan SF.

I hear ya, I'm not saying I really wanted to do mine but the dealer quoted me like nearly $2000 for parts and labor and I barley trust the dealers, that's why I do all my own work, or at least as much as I can. Besides I wanted to be able to say "Yeah I did my own clutch." all cool like. My truck is my hobby for the time being also so what else would I do with my free time?

A local Shop Quoted me about $650 in labor and parts where up to me, I know most guys spend about $100 get their fly's resurfaced alone, I replaced mine outright with new as I couldn't find a recommended machine shop that would do fly's in my time constraints.

I believe it's billed as a 9hr job so take your favorite shop's labor rate and multiply it by 9.

JUST MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THEM DO YOUR REAR MAIN!
