map light mod turns on other interior lights

i recently did the maplight mod (a bit behind the times, i know) to my 07 sport. i wired it exactly as specified on ja's page. i also did the footwell lights some time ago, also to ja's specs. both work fine as is.

after i did the maplight mod, i started playing around with the switches. everything works as described on his webpage. however, if i manually push the right most maplight, it turns on both, but using the switches doesn't turn it off. in playing with the switches now, it turns on the light over the back seat and in the trunk. cool. it also turns the footwells on. i can also turn them off.

i really like that it turns the back and trunk lights on, but no matter what combo i do, the maplights will only go off if i manually push them in again. everything is wired properly, including a good ground. i'm guessing it has something to do with the fact that the ile 12v- is taken from the footwell lighting switch for the maplight mod, causing them all to go off and on at the throw of a switch.

i was wondering if someone with a better mind in these matters can solve this. i'd love to retain the other two lights to turn on on command.

First thing to check is that when you inserted the bare wire into the unused position on the right maplight, a stray strand of copper wire is probably sticking out an making contact with the adjacent prong.

that was the first thing i checked. no stray wires.

what's interesting is that when i press the right side, the maplight, footwells, back and trunk lights all go on. the door lights do not. i think i will just keep it this way for my passengers in case i need all overhead lights to go on when it's dark. still hope i can do it via switch though...
