Massive oil leak..help!

Dang man! Did you do any offroading recently? That big of a leak looks like you knicked the oil pan somehow...
It is literally spraying out of the top of the oil filter. Headed to parts store now to buy new filter and praying that is the problem. Judging by the dipstick, I caught it just in time..
Will, good idea. That was the first thing I checked. Definitely engine oil.

How many miles did you have on the Mobil 1 filter before it went "Poof" ?

Man, that's scary. I'm going to buy a bunch of Toyota filters for my changes now after reading this! Not that it couldn't happen to any filter company though...

Less than 300 miles. Just changed it last weekend. It didn't rupture, it just appeared that the seal was bad. Visually it looked out of round. I'm still confused as to how I put several hundred miles on it before the problem arose.
I do plan to contact Mobil 1 to see if they will do anything. At idle it was literally spraying oil out of the sealed area on top of the filter. When I say "top" I mean when looking at it from the driver's side tire, it's the side closest to the hood. It sprayed oil all over the brakes, tire, left front suspension, and driver's side of the motor.
Edit: On the subject of oil filters, isn't there somewhere to buy them in bulk? I will probably go OEM from now on.

Not sure about bulk but I buy mine from Wilson Toyota in Bellingham when the have buy 3 get 1 free.
I know Wix makes a good filter, but I was under the impression that Mobil 1 did too. I imagine this was just one of those fluke things, but it has left me feeling skiddish about using a Mobil 1 filter. I know Frams are cheap, but they've never done this kind of thing. Running a Fram on it for now.
When you change your oil filter there are three things you must do.
1) Make sure the old oil filter gasket/seal comes off and is not left on the
on the engine. Installing a new filter with the old gasket/seal still on
the engine will result in a big oil leak.
2) Make sure the surface on the engine where the oil filter gasket/seal
contacts is clean.
3) Apply a light coat of oil on the new oil filter gasket/seal so it seats
smoothly. Installing a new oil filter without lightly lubricating the gasket/
seal can result in the gasket/seal distorting and not sealing properly.
My personal choice for oil filters is the NAPA Gold. I have used them for many years on all my vehicles and have never had a problem.
Yeah, I've always changed my own oil and always do exactly that. Check the filter mount location and lightly coat the gasket so it seals properly. Thanks for the tips.
As for NAPA, there are no NAPA stores here in town. Might as well order OEM online and just keep a few on hand.

Fram filters are fine...Been using them for over 30 years...If there were any problems with Fram filters then there would be THOUSANDS of dead vehicles every year due to the filter. When was the last time anyone ever heard of a filter killing a car?? And since Fram outsells it's next 5 competitors COMBINED.....Fram can't be making that crappy a filter.
With that said...I've been using OEM filters...My local Toyota dealer sells me a case at per filter cost the same as Fram and Wallmart.

I have heard of several problems with oil filters over the years and every single one of them was a Fram. Their filtering ability and capacity is one of the worst compared to most every other filter out. I have heard of a couple cases where the filter media disintegrated and damaged the engine. The rubber gaskets have been known to come loose when installing and causing a leak. Their back flow valve is very weak and will often cause a knock in the engine right at start up. They also have cardboard end caps and the pleating is very irregular. maybe the newest Fram filters are better, but I will not take a chance using what has been the worst filters made.
