Max load on a hardtop

What was the max load you ever put on your 1st gen hardtop? Has anyone ever overloaded and cracked their top?

I'm 280, and I just walked out to my front drive and stood on mine. It flexed a touch, so I'd guess if you distributed the weight properly it could handle 350-400 pounds. Way more than your stock springs will enjoy, anyway.

The load in my avatar was about 200 pounds probably, and was on a pallet rack bolted to the fiberglass through 6 rubber bushings.

Cool, good to know. I am going to put in 98 4runner 16" springs so it will be able to handle to weight, plus new shocks. I just want to fit a roof top tent without any problems. Thanks for the info.

Why not score a set of gutter-mount load bars, and mount your RTT to those?

Can I see some pics of how you mounted this? Was thinking of something similar for mine.

I don't have any closeups of my old setup. It was literally just a metal pallet rack that I scored up at Smith&Edwards, bolted straight to the hard top with grade8's and gimungous washers, and those big rubber corks for bushings. Very ghetto, but it worked while I needed it to.

My current setup has aluminum square tube bolted through the soft top to the rollbar, with angle brackets and gutter mounts on the ends. That lets me run load bars and a real rack. It's still not what I want (and it's loud as hell on the freeway), but it's closer.

You gonna make the 5mp cleanup?

Okay thanks.

I don't know. I think my club is having a trail ride that day. If not, I'm in.
