May 2016 Meet and Run

Any thoughts? I started a thread but it's quiet around T4R. I swapped alternators, still not charging. Seems to charge when there's a load (2-3k rpm) but at idle battery just drains while running.

Ground or relay, pull your big alternator relay and swap it with another relay that's the same see if that helps first also the main cable wire that goes to your fuse/relay box check that connection as well along with the two relays off the side right there in their own box also check for and cut/broken ground wires the water and muck will get inside the cable and cut off the connection and you would never see it and think everything looks good on your ends. Drag your hands along the cable/wires feel and look for open wire.

If you need a helping hand let me know I don't really have any plans. I actually might be heading your way to pick up some springs

pm'd you my number I'll be here trying to figure this out.

Yep, I'm out of ideas. Can't figure out how to get that 140a out. I've checked and cleaned every single connector and ground that I can get to. Idles rough (400ish? that's super low) Won't charge below 2k rpms. Not finding any burned, torn, or mucked grounds or wires. Ran fine all the way home Sunday, don't think I drove it Monday, started with the starter issues Tuesday. I'm about over this shit. Wonder if I should try cleaning the engine bay. There really isn't any mud up in it above the frame, it's mostly just dirt and dust.

Damn you I'm just seeing this message after getting home an hour ago and was in your neck of the woods picking up springs I could have easily come by, my bad I don't do the tap talk thing.
Let me check with the chick if we're doing anything tomorrow if not I could cruise over and throw my two cents at it with another set of eyes and hands.

You have to remove the whole fuse box to change that fuse i had that problem on a. 2008 FJ before its held in by screws

No worries man. I'm going to try swapping the battery tomorrow on the off chance that the Tacoma battery is bad too. after that I'm running out of ideas.

Yeah I'm trying to avoid checking that fuse. Seems to me though if it was blown, I wouldn't even get a charge at 3k rpms.

You are correct. It's going to be a bad alternator. Google it. Lots of people asking the same thing and it ends up being the alt almost every time.

You can pull it and take it to Autozone for testing.

But I already swapped a different alt in that tested good when I took it back.

My guess
1 replacement alt also bad. It happens.

2 corrosion somewhere from swimming last weekend. Specifically the battery ground. I haven't looked on this vehicle but they usually go to the block. It might go to the frame then the block.

3. I need to go back a page and read it better. You probably already did all that. :baby:

Replacement alt tested good, but same symptoms as stock. Two different batteries, but neither were tested. Cleaned every single ground and connector I could find. I've been on Google on and off all day. Maybe I'll pull the stock alt and have it tested for piece of mind.

See if they can test it at low RPM. The only other thing would be the voltage regulator but I'm pretty sure it is part of the alt. Googled it and it looks like it is bolted to the alt.

EDIT: Last resort, spray WD-40 where the brushes are. It will displace any water that might have gotten stuck in there.

fckit all. Alternator isn't charging today, pretty sure it was 2 days ago. Anyone wanna buy a slightly used lifted 4runner? Never been off roaded? hahaha. Got my tire replaced for 30 bucks at least.

Dang man that's some really bad luck! I think my alternator bearing got some mud dirt in it as there's a buzzing/ humming noise coming from my engine bay now, it gets louder when I give it gas. I'm pretty sure my alternator is still charging...how did you know it wasn't charging anymore?

Also I'm still getting the starting delay sometimes...happens way less than before (after cleaning starter connections). I'm going to replace the plunger/ contacts inside the starter to see if that will fix it.

That water crossing really f'd us good!

Hook up a meter to battery you will see it drop if alt isn't charging while running
I went to leave for work right now and my battery is dead...
But it's my 3rd gen lol...

Water definitely screwed us up. I changed the fan and awaiting for the radiator so I can install. Hopefully she'll fire right up and no alternator issue. You know what this means...need more suspension lift!

Yeah I'll do that today when I get home from work, but I have been driving my 4 runner all weekend. I think if my alt wasn't charging the battery would have been dead by now, it's been over a week already.

I was idling low so it wasn't charging at idle, but that part at least seems to be fixed. You should see 13.5-13.8 at idle. Let me know if the plunger fixes your starter issue. I'm gonna run by the car wash tonight after the kid goes to bed and see if I can't get some of this mud and debris off the bottom. Engine bay needs a cleaning too, mostly just dirty and dusty connectors, there wasn't a whole lot of mud up in it.
