Mechanical Auto-Meter Temp Gauge. Help!

I have a 2001 2x4 Tacoma with a 2.4, and a 1999 Limited 4runner 3.4.

The stock temp gauge died on the Tacoma. Confirmed, to be the gauge pod by a toyota tech. when I was in for rust inspection. I foolishly looked on the internet and saw a few posters say the rear temp sensor (2 wire) controls the gauge. The front (one wire) in the top hose neck goes to the ecm.

Anyway, That was wrong, and i broke the "point of no return" safety seal on the package. The probe is much larger then the stock tap point in the hose neck. Auto-meter customer service says there is a M16 x 1.5 plugged hole in the head on 22RE engines that I can adapt to. They just didn't know where it was.

Anyone know where said plugged hole might be ? If not. The auto-meter gauge is really nice. If there is somewhere I can tap on the 4runner, I really wouldn't mind putting it in her !

I just used an adapter and then put that inline with a radiator hose....

I'd be interested in the answer to your question. I think I know where the oil one is, but not the coolant one. Since we don't have 22re blocks you aren't going to find the hole the rep is referring to.

I ended up getting a cheap adapter, tapped to fit one of the fittings provided and then screwed the temp sender (right name?) into that.

In my case the sender would have been too long otherwise and the hole in the adapter is too small to fit the sender anyway, it had to be tapped.

Your 2.4l motor is not the 22RE, they stopped putting that motor in US trucks in 1995. You have the 2.4l 2RZ they put in 2WD trucks from '96 on.

BBP and Hab probably have the right answer - insert a tapped fitting into your radiator return hose.

Is this the sensor you're talking about?

That's a 3RZ block, but yours should be similiar. If you felt like getting jiggy with it, you could always unbolt that guy and take it to a machinist to be drilled and tapped for your new sensor.

Yes Kid V, they look identical. The probe on the auto-meter looks like, and is about the size of a .357 magnum round. The hold down nut is wider then the base in the picture. I will probably order an electric gauge, which has a much smaller probe.

Does anyone know what size thread the sender in the picture is?

When I built my Samurai (3TC/ 5 spd. Corolla engine/trans) I bought a set of Equus gauges from OReillys simply because they would fit where I wanted to put them. Anyway, they came with a variety of adapters that allowed me to install the probe (mechanical, like yours) in the factory temp. sensor hole.
