Metal click sound on rear end

Generally, when I step on the running board and shake the car on the rear side, this clicking sound will appear. After each car wash, the sound is gone for about 3-4 days,then it comes again. I let the dealer checked several times, but each time they just said the chassis needs some lubrication.. I wonder is this sound a normal wear and tear? Or some parts are problematic? I'm not sure if I can locate it and put some grease on it? I didn't find useful information on the web. Thank you for your input! My 4Runner is 2012 Sr5 4wd with 31000 miles on it. No mechanical mod.

you gave the dealer a shot and they dropped the ball... and probably wasted an hour or two of your time?

simple fix/identification: take it to an independent shop you trust and let them put it on a rack or crawl under it while you rock it. that sound should be easy to find since its so loud. id rather just tip someone 40-60 bucks and be in & out quickly (ive found muffler shops are pretty good at finding noise sources).

I went to dealer because at that time the bumper to bumper warranty was still effective. But it's indeed a waste of time..

Just a bushing that's gone dry. When you wash the vehicle (I assume you use a car wash with a chassis clean, right?), the bushing gets wet, sound goes away for a few days, then returns when all the water/soap has dried out completely.

Just crawl underneath the vehicle while someone shakes the vehicles side to side, or steps on the bars! When you find it, to confirm that's the one, take some wd40 or other penetrating lube, shoot it all over the rubber bushing and go for a drive. Noise should be gone completely if that's the bushing.

I'd bet its a couple of bushings making noise, so if one doesn't fix it, do the whole thing over again and find others that are making noises. I'd start looking at the shock bushings first.

Only way to eliminate this noise completely is to change the bushing out. I say change it out, because you WILL need to pull it out completely to put graphite lube on it, and if you're that far into it, might as well just replace the part. They aren't really that expensive anyways.

Thanks! I will try WD-40 on the bushing.. Hope it will last for a while.
