Method Wheels and Impact Wrench Sockets

Hi All,

I recently purchased a new impact wrench and sockets, and was really excited to test them out on my wheels until I discovered that the sockets are too big to fit into the lug nut holes on my Method Wheels.

For those that may have experienced a similar situation, what did you do?

Are there thinner walled impact sockets that work for this kind of situation?

Should I attach the chrome socket to my impact wrench (I suspect this is not the best solution since the chrome socket may potentially break = danger)?

Or, just man up and continue to remove the wheels with hand tools?

Sunex, Grey Pneumatic, and Proto all make thin wall impact sockets. I would consider getting the ones with a protector sleeve for rims.

Hey AJ, what lug nuts are you using with your wheels? I have Extended Thread Gorilla spline drive and they come with an adaptor/key style that an impact socket goes on to. Anyway,you could use the chrome sockets on an impact but depednig on the amount of torque it provides it may be to much for the chrome socket. Should be fine breaking them loose though it is not ideal. The thin walled impact is what I also would suggest.
You don't have to get a whole set. Just get the size you need 21mm or 19mm. Whichever fits your lugs

T - just a cautionary tale - be careful if you are using impact guns on lug nuts. Make sure you know what torque is the max for those wheels/studs/nuts and that your gun doesn't exceed.

I have a thin walled socket for my lugs which then connects to my impact. I only use the impact to loosen nuts, not tighten, because I can't adjust the torque setting on my gun.

Correct I would only use the impact to loosen and not to tighten the lug nuts down.

Hey Guys!

I was only planning on using the impact wrench to break the lugs, and not tighten. I have the Sunex impact sockets, and they're really beefy. I'll check out the thin walled version, but I suspect it'll still be too large for the Method Wheel holes, which are really small.

i just use the thin wall socket that came with my lug wrench.
