Midwest 3rd Gen BS Thread - WI, MI, IA, MN, IL, IN, OH, SD, ND, MO, NE, KS

Being from the midwest we are the minority on this forum so I figured id start this thread to bring together all us heartlanders.

This can be a spotted, BS, and organizational thread.

Ill start! On my way back home for break (19th of dec) going through Appleton, WI near the timber rattlers stadium I saw the biggest and most extreme sas'd third gen. It was similar to downpour11's but with full armor! It looked like he had a ladder coming off his swing out too. I want to turn around and chase him down so bad but didnt have an exit. He was head south on highway 41.


And just today on my way back from the twin cities I saw another third gen with full bumpers (tire carrier rear) headed west on 94 near eau claire.

You should go to Colorado some time. There are modified 4runners and Tacos everywhere you look. Its awesome. I was there last week visiting family and friends, and was driving them crazy naming every Toyota I saw and what mods they had. I saw a sweet heavily modded fj60. The Midwest doesn't have near the population of Toyotas. Its the delusion that here in the Midwest people insist on driving "American made" vehicles. As if such a thing actually exists

Fairly recent transplant to Indianapolis, I'm from Ithaca NY originally. Bought this 1996 Limited locally 2 summers ago, it hadn't seen a winter since 2002! Undercoated liberally and is now a total beast in the snow (General Altimax Arctic 245/75R16 on Tacoma rims)









Most of the fun roads I take it on are actually back home in NY, basically poorly maintained forest roads. All of the ones in the HNF here in Indiana seem very well graded, any sedan could easily drive them.

Big 10 3rd Gen 4Runner Thread?

So this is basically the Big 10 minus the states of Ohio, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Maryland and New Jersey 3rd Gen 4Runner thread? OK, I understand leaving the newcomers out (Penn State was #11), but what about Ohio State? At least the state of Ohio fits into your Big 10 list historically and geographically.

Just for the record, I'm a Texas Aggie and not a Buckeye fan, but it made me laugh that your list of states included all of the old school Big 10 states (from when "10" was the actual number of schools in the conference) and left out Ohio... just an observation.

Yeah I only got the front one but it's all modified and painted and on. Took some nice pictures but my computer is out of commission right now and posting pics with my Kindle does not work (no ad card or usb slot). I'll get some up someday, and make a build thread too.

Yep DOT car rot is right. They have been putting that brine solution on the roads and I cringe every time I drive through it. I was joking that I should leave all the dirt on my 4runner as a barrier between the paint and salt!

Take care of those 3rd gens people, let's keep them on the road and not forgotten. ��

Drove from Illinois suburbs to East Indiana this afternoon, got to try out my new (to me) michelin m/s tires.

Do you guys use sandbags in the rear for added traction at all?

Haha I wasn't really thinking along the lines of the big 10 as much as what was geographically in the center/close to me. My world really revolves around hunting, fishing and the Packers. Gotta love da Packers

No but I also have anywhere between 200-300 lbs of tools And equipment in the back at all times. With our short wheel bases though sandbags won't do much. If you have 99+ multi mode can be a real life saver.

Likewise I typically have about 70lb of tools and recovery gear in the back, I also run dedicated snow tires in the winter in a narrower profile (245/75R16), they make a world of difference. Not only are they narrower (245 vs 265) but the tread pattern on the Altimaxs shaves another inch or so off the width. Instead of floating around on slush that builds up inbetween lanes, the truck does a much better job of 'slicing' through. Also, there's nothing wrong with running in 4Hi on the highway, just remember to go back into 2wd if you get off the highway and are making a sharp turn on dry pavement. Don't know about the SR5 t-cases but on the Limited I can just push a button to go into 4Hi on the fly at any speed under 60mph.

Our 4Runners are definitely disadvantaged in winter high speed driving by the huge ground clearance, short wheelbase, and (relatively) low weight and fat tires. For me, snow tires have totally transformed my winter driving experience!
