Made a thread recently - got some views but little advise.

Dealership says it's done the milkshake. They claimed they could tell by how bloated the coolant hoses were that the coolant was contaminated with trans fluid. Also claimed that the transmission pressure is greater than the radiators, so the fluid really leaks into the radiator before leaking into the trans. Does this make sense? Nonetheless, they claim the small amount of coolant that leaked is enough to have been absorbed by the "clutch fibers" and is causing the transmissing to slip.

The trans fluid does not look foamy whatsoever.

I've got an estimate for $4700+tax for a new radiator and rebuilt trans. I can save 500 by using a used trans.

What would you do?

Should I drop in a new radiator and the external trans cooler, and have another shop flush the hell out of the trans?

Thanks...

P.S. I paid 9 for the car, owe about 7 on it....

not sure how to go about looking at trading or selling a car with a screwed up transmission

What year is yours and where you at?

Do you have any mechanical knowledge, because dropping the Trans really is not entirely a difficult job.

I would advise finding a used trans and doing the swap yourself.

Did a Toyota dealership diagnose your issue? If it were me,I would install an external cooler, bypassing the stocker. Then do several fluid changes and see if that helps. You've really got nothing to lose except the cost of the fluid.

Sorry to hear that buddy. Same advice i gave before, professional flush. It may be too late now since its already slipping, who knows, maybe worth a try, maybe.

You can see if the fluid looks pinkish, its not really about foaming, just pull the dipstick.

Oh yeah tranny pressures are much higher than the 16lbs/si on the radiator. The radiator isn't the problem, its the worthless design for a tranny cooler built into the radiator. See this if it matters: any body ever crack-opened up OEM rad, if not, here we go! - YotaTech Forums

So whatever you do, by pass the factory cooler. I also recommend a Magnefine inline filter.

For only a $500 difference, I would go with a rebuild, at least its components are new and it has a warranty.

Yes they did diagnose it by visual inspection of bloated hoses and experiencing the gear slip

Fluid is brown and thank you for your advice.

Are you sure it's milkshaked? Your tranny fluid is brown which means it's burned. How does your coolant look? The pressures are higher on the trans side but once you turn the truck off the coolant pressure is still there and the trans pressure isn't so then the coolant pushes into the trans. If it's milkshaked you should have evidence both ways. If your coolant is not oily/foaming and overheating your engine and the trans fluid just looks old I'd say there is no milkshake going on.

Well, see if you can find some threads that are about pulling the transmissions, or buy yourself a Haynes manual. And look over the steps. It seems like a major task to think about it, but its not too bad really.

8 bolts and the drive shafts are free. little bit of interior tear apart to get the shifters out. 8 easy bolts for the Trans mount.

undo the two cooler lines and the dip stick tube. Then get the 6 I think bell housing bolts, which if you buy a wobble socket, isn't too bad to get at.

But think it over. If you tend to be mechanically inclined, I'd just try to find another one, and swap it over. Changing the fluid is like putting a band aid on a bullet wound.

Denso, same OEM brand, but you'll find it cheaper anywhere but the dealer, about $117 w/shipping on ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Radiator-DE...ota|Model:4Runner&hash=item5662961dca&vxp=mtr

Well brown is better than pink maybe? I don't understand how the hoses would buldge as a result of tranny fluid in the coolant though, that is odd.

So how bad does it slip? The rpms didn't appear to get very high in your vids is why i ask. Shifts firm (especially 1-2)? Luck man.

Oil ruins hoses that aren't designed to have oil in them

I am not sure what it has done

Mechanic at the dealer claimed even a small amount of coolant would saturate the clutch fibers and cause slippage

mechanic at dealer trying to scare you. Let me ask you this, did you mention the milkshake first or did they? I bet it was you since they don't usually call it that from what I've heard.

They did . When I told them what I experienced one said " just pop the hood and see if it's milkshake. "

Coolant is low...
