Milkshaked - need advise

Coolant is low but looks okay?

Not trying to be annoying. Just trying to keep you from pulling your trans if it doesn't need to be...

Reservoir is empty and I couldn't see any up at the radiator cap to tell

Not annoying very much appreciate any input. Flying blind and in over my head

Everyone else is telling me to bail out but I love my truck and would be very very sad if I had to get rid of it
 
Either way if you do end up having the pink milkshake:

Buy a used tranny for $500 from a part out and have a shop or you and some buddies put it in.

Will be MUCH cheaper.

If that's a shot of your Trans fluid, you DO NOT have the milkshake. Your trans fluid would look like the pic attached. Literally, Pepto Bismol.

Here's what you do, and it has already been suggested to do some of this stuff.


Get up in the AM. BEFORE you start your truck, open your radiator. See what color is in there. It might be RED, it might be PINK, but IT WILL BE OPAQUE(sp). It SHOULD look like colored celophane.

If you can't see what color it is, then top the rad off, and if it stays clear, you're clear.

Next, would be to get a trans cooler, and a Magnefine filter, and Install those. Do a trans FLUSH AND FILL. BYPASS THE STOCK RADIATOR!!!!


Now. That will PREVENT any further possibilities of a "Pink Milkshake".

IF you open the rad up, and you see a thick, Pepto Bismol colored sludge in there, they you're F'd, and need a new transmission.

What's the mileage on your 4runner? I just did my radiator,hoses, t stat even the clips that hold on to hoses. All oem. Mine wasn't failing but I did it to prevent milkshake. I'm in Chicago. I can help you swap out radiator if you need help.
 
Can't he just crack the valve loose on the bottom of the radiator to collect a sample? Funnel it into a clear glass maybe?

Thank you for your advice I have to check the truck out this morning. It's still sitting at the dealer

I'm at 160k. Thank you for your offer I may take you up on this. I'm in lisle

So I fired it up and it began to whine again out of the gearbox. Drove it a block or two and if shifted OK

Does it make sense that I'm dealing with a messed up transmission for a previous owners milkshake?

I am thinking of towing it to my parents and doing the flush after I get the ext. cooler
 
I don't see any evidence of milkshake. Not sure about the whining but I'd start by changing the trans fluid and go from there.

Mine whines no matter what gear I'm in. It comes and goes, been doing it about a year. I've got a couple ideas about what it might be, but I'm not going to do anything about it until it makes me.

Mine is definitely not the milkshake, for whatever that's worth.
