Yoter is correct. There are already threaded holes behind the headliner...you can feel them if you run your fingers across there. To install, just take a knife and slice the carpet a bit, and screw in the handle. Then you place the caps back over the screws...it literally took less than 2 minutes.

I found mine in a part out, you may get lucky that way. You may have to just buy it from Toyota, I think I remember seeing they were $20 or so.

GOT IT!!!

i thought i saw two holes there and always wondered if they were ready to go with nothing special. I've ben wanting to do this for a while and picked up 4 handles from a salvaged 4runner in San Diego. so if anyone needs an extra handle i have a couple.

so basically those holes are a direct screw size fit for the factory bolts that are used for the "OH SH1T" handle??

Started the 231mm TBU project this weekend. My rotors have been warped for a few months now, and it shakes pretty bad whenever I stop. Figured I'd fix that problem before the baby gets here next month. It was going to be around $170 to do just rotors and pads, and they'd probably warp anyways, so I decided to do the upgrade for a few bucks more.

I got the calipers from the local junkyard, $60 for the pair. Rebuild kit from Toyota was $13 and the paint was $20. Bought Callahan rotors and ceramic pads from Amazon for $120, and bits and pieces from O'reillys.

Calipers (rebuilt and painted) - $93

By the time you sell your old calipers you'll beat me on price, but I did pretty well I think. Paid $260 for everything new, shipped!

LOTS of time w/PB Blaster on those 17mm bolts beforehand! Trust me! Get at them from all sides with the PBB, too. Then make sure ya got a BFH or rubber mallet around to beat on the wrench.

Ya they've gotten a few coats the last couple days. I usually do the work in the grounds garage where I work. They have some nice impact guns which have helped in the past. Mine isn't too rusty underneath either...hopefully that helps a bit. Starting today after work, hopefully everything goes smoothly.
 
Well the brakes are finished. It was about the easiest brake install I've done. Got the old calipers off with a bit of force, trimmed the dust shield and mounted all the new parts up.

Ended up having the dust shield scraping the rotor, and it took me a couple days to get to it. It was hard to see unless you had the wheel off and looking down and behind the caliper.

But that's fixed now, I flushed the brake fluid with new DOT4, and bled all four brakes. Stopping is so much easier now. And the truck doesn't shake coming to a stop anymore. I had to get used to such a smooth stop after having the warped rotors for so long.

New vs Old...old have 197k on them, and not too bad of shape. I'll probably rebuild them and sell them on CL for a little less than what the stores sell them.

Next up on the pre-baby checklist are new CV axles. My boots have been torn for a year now, time for some new ones!

Glad you got the squeaking figured out. I think I recall someone saying it was probably the dust shield? :D

Ya you and about 5 others! It pissed me off, cause I got under there and pulled the shield back from the rotor. But you had to have the wheel off and use a screwdriver to get at the section that was rubbing.

At least its all done! I can drive without sounding like a freight train and brake without shaking like a rag-doll.
 
I'm still chasing a firmer pedal. Did you adjust your rears or have they been worked on recently? I'm thinking mine are toast. Have to crank the PB pretty far up to get it to stop in reverse at 5-10mph

Mine could be a little more firm. Its better than it was with the stock setup. But I still need to adjust the rears (possibly replaces the shoes) and go from there.

My PB doesn't do much. It takes 10+ clicks until it does anything. I didn't have the right tools to get the drums off this weekend, so I have to do it later. Once those are done, the pedal should be better and I should be set.
 
Remember what we went through on my drums!? Remember that they take precise adjustment. Lol. Anyway what tools you need?

Well my drums don't just fall off like yours did, so I need the two M8 bolts to pop the drum off. I have some at work, just didn't have them when I needed them Sunday or have the time.

I'll probably work on them after work on Thursday.

Just use a hammer they will come off.
 
Nice build!

I did the Tundra brake upgrade soon after I bought my 4Runner and its been great! Toyota should of done this from the factory.

I like seeing your progression on the suspension. I think you have convinced me to go ahead with a very similar setup. I like your stance. I am a little worried that my 265/75 16 tires will look small though
 
Are you getting new axles or just boots? If you wanna come over we can do some rebooting together I have one I need to do as well.
